Doesn't a transponder quit if the plane breaks up? It's not the same thing as the emergency pinger is it?

Because it's in the water. Watch CNN.

Yes, the transponder is different than the emergency locator transmitter (ELT). As I have always understood, the transponder only verifies the heading. Once the plane crashes on land or water the transponder doesn't work anymore.
ELTs on planes have been disabled before in plane crashes, especially those that crash in water. I remember that was came into play with the Air France crash. They knew where they lost contact and found floating debris I think around 5 or 6 days later. It took them considerably longer to find the black boxes.

It is? All they are saying is they 'suspect' it's at the bottom of the sea. What happened before the aircraft tumbled out of the sky? CNN is now on overdrive with very little light being shed...........as usual.

When one plane accidentally(?) hits a building in downtown NYC you can say tragic accident - when a second one does the same thing you know there is no accident involved.
When one plane mysteriously disappears it can be assumed there was a tragic accident - when a second one does the exact same thing - it sounds to me like some terrorists are amassing airliners to fly into buildings. One up side of that would be that the passengers would most likely still be alive.
Food for thought. I hope they do find the wreckage of this plane for the sake of the families.

As I stated in another post, I am still suspicious of the first Malaysian plane missing, flight 370, that went down this year. To find absolutely NOTHING is just too curious to me.
