There is a topic on the Forum about a proposal by telemarketers to void rings and leave messages directlly in your voicemail on our cell phone. ....perhaps this was  a test.........I got an odd call on my smart phone without a ring, when I checked my voicemail it said if I wanted to continue my number on the Do Not Call List to call this number.  I didn't call the number, but went directly to the FTC site and checked to see if both my phones were still registered with the DNC Registry and they were......so watch out for this scam.............And this is a phone I purchasd last year and immediately registered it with both state and federal Do Not Call registries...so its not like it was expiring either. since its barely been a year since the phone was signed up.......Beforewarned!

Be wary of companies that pretend to represent the Do Not Call Registry and offer to add your name to the list for a fee. The registry is free for consumers – and the Federal Trade Commission says third parties aren't allowed to register consumers.

Also watch for fake emails:

This scam involves an email that has been circulated, advising people that a new “National Cell Phone Do Not Call Registry” was recently launched. Be advised that this is not a legitimate site, as both cell phone numbers and landline numbers can be listed on the actual DNC registry.

How to avoid the National Do Not Call Registry scam:

Just being educated about the actual NDNC registry will help you avoid being taken in by this scam. The only thing that will most likely happen if you DO register with this “cell phone” registry is you are likely to see an increase in telemarketing calls to your cell phone. Just make sure you research your national do not call list register and educate yourself. If you believe you are a victim of this scam, you can report it on the link below:

Don't you just miss the good old days when the only crank calls you received were from perverts?  Seemed bad back then, but it's so much worse now.

I am glad I never set up my voice mail on my cell phone.

It's sad but true...but I got the double whammy... I hung up on a scam caller with a heavy accent who called back and left a filthy voice message. Pathetic. I could barely understand the message at first but once I did, it was clear we would not be best friends.

On our land line I do not set up voice mail, I got so sick of the scammers leaving messages I just shut it off, so now when I do not see a phone number I recognize I do not answer, and family and friends who have been given our number know if I do not answer at home to call my DH phone so that they can leave a message if an emergency occurs.

LOL @Pandalady, that was a good one!!!!!  I'll admit we'd "try" to disguise our voices and call all our friends and family.. they always knew who it was.

My current "favorite" telemarketers are calling the Tracfone I ordered when the SamsungSky was the phone a few months back.

After I bought it, I realized that at my age with no family around anywhere, I need more to be able to speak to a real person than I need to save some dollars every month.  (I have been working carefully to save elsehwere and that's working for me.)  Any way -- I've kept the Samsung and have been learning way better how I can make good use of a smartphone while I have the minutes that came with it without messing up my old phone,  but I've kept my Verizon line and number for now at least. 

I didn't give that number to anyone at all -  and the only time I've made phone calls has been to myself!  And still, I get several calls a week on that phone, all from numbers I've never seen before.  Very obviously robo dialers who just try every number combination they can!  I never answer -  it can't be anything good.

PS:  I like the phone itself - not sure of the service though.

@Suziepeach  No caller ID feature back then.  Yep, the disguised voice trick didn't work for me either.  My "career" ended quickly when my parents heard and so did my "friendship" with the gal who was a "not so good" influence on me.  Lucky for me, I turned out just fine...with good phone etiquite!

Although, I "busted" a young gal about 20 years ago.  DH and I got called and hung up from a number several times in the overnight hours.  I chose to wait until a "decent" hour and call the number back.  I got a mom who explained that her daughter had a slumber party and this must have been her "crew" playing games.  She told me she'd take care of it and I never got another call that late or from that number.  Now, I  would block that number instead of calling back.
