This is why you don't take a nap when you have a 3 yr old to take care of.

Every friend of ours that had children always had locks installed high up on their doors so their children couldn't open doors on their own to get outside or down steps, like the basement.

Again, don't know if this child walked out himself but I get frustrated when I see stories about small children getting out of their house and wandering around.

I suspect because the 7-year-old who walked to a park 1/2 mile from home unchaperoned was unscathed, people were outraged that there was police interference.

Now, a 3-year old playing in his own yard dies and the parents should be crucified.

It feels to me like we are a reactionary society--we show our outrage only if and when a tragedy ensues.

So my question: At what age do you feel a child should be left to his/her own devices (i.e., unsupervised)?

There is no magic number....I know when I was 7-8 yrs old my mother wasn't out in the yard watching me...nor did she take me to the park.....however....when my DD was that age she was not left unattended to roam the streets/park/neighborhood.

A 3 year old should not be unsupervised. I have a 3 year old nephew. I can't imagine having him play outside while someone was in the house napping or even awake. Too many things can happen.

if the parents had the child lock turned on then he would not have been able to let himself out; tragic outcome but the car should have been locked and no 3 year-old should ever be outside unsupervised

So sad. Life is so fragile and things can happen in a split second. I have an unpredictable 3 1/2 year old and a 7 year old.
