Another Facebook Question

I still don't really understand the recent changes FB made, probably because I'm not on enough.

The other day, I commented on a friend's photo. Come to find out, that photo with my comment was reposted for all my friends to see. Today I logged on to FB and there are about 5 photos right in a row that a friend of mine commented on. I don't know the person who's photos those are, I just know the person who commented on them.

Is there a way to change a setting so this doesn't happen? I don't want every photo I comment on to be reposted for all to see nor do I want to see every photo that my friends have commented on.

Is there a way that I can hide comments I make on a friend's wall so not all my friends see it?
