Re: And so it begins ( again)

@Sooner :  Pasta isn't the only issue ( I could live with that ); there many shortages in food and cleaning items beginning to appear in my area and I'm sure its going to get much worse between now and April because of massive growth in Covid.

Re: And so it begins ( again)

@patbz  Had the same problem this week. Wanted to make Alfredo. I finally settled on Mrs. Miller's noodles. They were passable, but not the same. I liked the toothsomeness of the noodles, because I didn't overcook them.

@kivah   I enjoy Italian food.  If you ever see Sclafani pasta or tomato products in a store pick some up.  Their items are imported and so more expensive but so good.

used to find Sclafani in Connecticut stores but none since I moved here to DC.

@patbz DD went to BJ's last week to get her Christmas ham and they were limiting purchase to 1 they said because there is a shortage of hams.

@aroc3435 :  Years ago I lived in Silver Spring and worked in DC.  There was an international Safeway near 16th and Pennsylvania ( ground floor was regular SW but basement was full of international delicacies ( think it catered to Embassy crowd).  That may not still be there but something ( maybe Whole Foods?) surely has filled that need.

I'm not a big pasta fan but have always wondered why there are so many types when they all taste the same.  I gave up trying to keep up with them and now keep an ample supply of egg noodles on hand to use as "pasta".  They're much easier to eat.

@patbz.  Could you have used spaghetti?

My mother used to make broad noodles and cheese (a mix of pot cheese and farmer cheese). YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!

YUMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite!

Too bad you all don't live near an Amish community. I buy all of my pasta (among many other things) from my two local Amish grocery stores. They never run out of varieties and their pasta is all homemade too! Yum!

@ID2  You don't need to live near an Amish community to purchase fresh pasta. It is available in many stores.

Or you can make it yourself. Easy!

If you have pasta eat and enjoy.  I can't even think that what kind of pasta you have would rank as any sort of "problem" in today's world.

Count your blessings and enjoy whatever noodle is around.

[ Edited ]

@patbz Thank you for the tip.

I just checked the DC Safeway locations online and didn't see anything at or near the location you listed.  The one I used to use when visiting my daughter maybe twelve years ago when she lived in NW DC was the Safeway under the Watergate Condos.

You took stairs or an elevator down to get to it.  It was small but carried a lot of good items.  They closed that location several years ago.

They built a new one to replace an older one at 14th and E St SE that opened in August but I haven't visited yet due to the pandemic.  It is open 24 hrs. and has gotten rave reviews on Nextdoor.

It is very near where my daughter, S-i-L, and the grands live now and in walkable distance for me.  Hoping it is still fabulous when I get to check it out when this plague subsides.

I'm in southern Calif and never heard of Sclafani. I mostly shop Costco (on-line) and they don't have many choices of items/brands. I'm Jewish and love everything Italian. If anything says "Italy" - I'll buy it. No one can go around hungry -- if they have pasta and sauce.I always put a little pasta on my dog's food - she also loves it (without the sauce).
