@Ainhisgwrote:

@World Travelerthank you so much for your detailed response!  If I get the $79 kit, would I get the option to purchase the health portion later if I want it?

Hmmmmm.....not sure. Would certainly think so, as it would be a sale for them. But my thought is that it may cost more purchasing them separately. Just a hunch.

@Sooner I hear that... Surely, there must be an opt in or opt out as far as them sharing information... I can only say that if there isn't that's a total deal breaker...

@stevieb  Yeah!  Maybe they are "unknown" for a reason!  Woman Surprised

Re: Ancestry.com and other DNA test kits

@gellen There are a number on articles online that compare the various kits and that state the strengths and weaknesses of each. You can just Google 'DNA test kit comparison' or something similar... This site, seemed to offer good guidance based on what one might specifically be seeking.

They did not think 23 and Me was best for genealogy but was good for the health information. There were other kits they felt offered better and more specific genealogical information.

@Sooner I have some cousins I know are out there somewhere and that's exactly where I'd prefer they stay...

Re: Ancestry.com and other DNA test kits

I used 23&Me.

YOU HAVE THE OPTION OF PRIVACY.

You don't have to have your name out there, nor do you have to receive a list of your relatives.

Re: Ancestry.com and other DNA test kits

I tested with ancestry.com and National Geographic. The only difference was 10 per cent. One said British Isles. The other said Iberian Peninsula. Thanks to some postings on these bulletin boards, I learned that there were many people from the Iberian Peninsula who migrated to Ireland and Wales, so both results could make sense.

You're not the only one @Sooner! Smiley Very Happy

I'm also not interested in finding out that I may not be who I am, if that makes sense.

As far as the health information, I know what my parents and siblings died from and pretty sure I know what I will die from.

@stevieb You are correct, at least with the DNA kits and services I paid for.

There was a place where you could check a box if it was okay for your existence to be shared with someone who might be looking for you or interested in seeing if I was related to them, giving several possible matches. Some of those people I knew to be relatives, not close like 1st or 2nd cousins, but further down the line.

I chose not to have my name and information shared with them; however, they must have chosen to do so or I wouldn't have seen their names and home town identified.

Maybe sometime in the future I will get involved with all the emails or reunions that might bring me; but for now, I choose not to be contacted by them.

Re: Ancestry.com and other DNA test kits

@Noel7 Yes, you are correct; that was my experience too with the three companies I had my DNA tested with. It is up to you as to whether or not you want them to contact you or even know of your existence.
