I am woefully not up to date on what is an appropriate amount of cash to give as a wedding gift. I was invited to a wedding and while I don't plan to attend, the groom is the son of a friend. I don't know the son well, but do want to send something to send good wishes to the couple. How much do folks gift these days?

Just had the same thing happen twice this year, $100.

It seems to me that different folks have different ideas about amounts. Anywhere from 20 bucks to 100 is what I have seen on this board. My husband's counsin's son got married, I sent him a check for 75.
A friends daughter got married, I got her a skillet like one I had and loved and gave a check for 50, I think, it was a few years back.

It depends entirely on your budget. $100 seems like far too much to me, particularly since you don’t really know the groom or bride.

I was giving 100 dollars for a wedding gift 40 years ago. My niece just got married and we gave them 500 dollars. Thank goodness we only have 2 nephews who are not married yet.

"I was invited to a wedding....."
"...son of a friend. I don't know the son well..."
Why the invite then? Prime example of "invite for gift." If I were in your shoes, I would send them a nice wedding card & like you, not attend. Nothing more & nothing less.

Last two weddings I have gone to I gave either 300 or 360 (20 times chai)

I'm giving $25 AmEx card with a congrats card. Whoppee! Hey, if you don't know the couple that well and they are expecting a gift.....That's it. Don't expect a thank you either.
Invited but not attending the wedding.

OK maybe I'm having a duh moment, but what's 20 times chai mean?

I say..........$100 if you've been to a picnic with them - - no picnic = $50 max
(for those not understanding - clarification: if you know them well = the higher amount......don't know them but you know their relatives = the lower figure)
