Re: American Kids Are Graduating From High School At Record Rates

@Burnsite Was there any reason given by the school for not wanting the cursive club?

That seems peculiar to me, to say the least.

I taught my daughter cursive.

Besides, how do you sign your name on any form without cursive?

Printing is acceptable.  Most people I know who prefer to print have a signature that comes out like something in between.

Re: American Kids Are Graduating From High School At Record Rates

STEM in our district told us 'no more paper texts, tablets', which were destroyed or vandalized. Tablets have to be charged so wehave a whole new set of computer rules to enforce w/consequences.

Then, if I could get the mimeo up and working and Discovery Ed curriculum hadnt crashed, we had too little bandwidth b/c all the classes, even primary, were online.

The man who bought the bandwidth was not an educator but an accountant. Guess what-he wasnt in the habit of buying to meet the needs of the school once the budget was set.

After 3 years of this and countless wasted classroom time, I finally have another bandwidth.

If only...

Exceptions to getting the required HS diploma or GED would be too numerous to have to manage. Just what education needs-more big gov't. sticking it's nose in-NOT.

Traditionally cursive had been taught in 3rd grade-5th grade. Proximal distal development was more mature at that age.

It is still taught, along with keyboarding, at the private, very expensive ($30,000- a year +) day independent schools throughout the country. Parents insist on both skills.

I teach at the college level and have to agree that many are being pushed through high school. They come into college not being able to write, with poor reading comprehension skills, and just a low fund of knowledge.   I think this young generation is the generation of patting them on the back and not failing them or scolding them, so they feel entitled and yet are really uneducated.  I also find that many students have the ability, they are just lazy.  Why should they learn or memorize anything when they can just use their phone and google it!

The "entitlement" is passed on and on and on..............especially the past 7 years...

I hope you're not speaking racially when you put entitlement in "--" .

Re: American Kids Are Graduating From High School At Record Rates

Boy, am I glad AZ passed in the tests, whatever they are.  We came at a solid 49!!!!!! Yea!?  I cannot PRINT worth a hill of beans . I can write so anybody can read what I write, even when PRINT shows up on a form.   One of GSs opened his bday card and announced he couldn't read chinese.  I WROTE what they call us, but because it was totally different he had no idea that he was looking at real words.  Teachers need to be able to TEACH children what they need to know in real life.  LEAVE THE TEACHERS to TEACH.  Get rid of that teach to the test.  When our oldest GD started school, I was really shocked getting a note home saying DO NOT GIVE THE STUDENTS breakfast as they will get it at school so they get the proper nutrition to be able to concentrate on taking the tests. GAWD< I just hate the way teachers are held back from what they know that each child in their class needs.  Love the teachers!!!!!--------tedEbear

sorry for the ramble,my typing grade was D-(actually an F)
