For the first time ever, when I logged on to check our account, I was told that I would be sent (by text or email) a temporary security code needed to access our account. I did get it and did use it and it did access the account.
Sorry for your trouble, so very annoying! I heard an expert this morning say that we might as well give up, as long as we have given our information to anybody, anywhere, somebody can have access to it and use it against us. Banks, credit cards, hospitals, doctors, Social Security offices, shopping venues. Nothing we can do - it takes ONE person out of the thousands that could access our info on a daily basis to misuse it.
Sadly, this is true. The solution is for all of us to check any and all accounts we have daily and wherever possible to have text alerts sent anytime a transaction occurs on your accounts.

Exactly, Buck.
That is exactly why I logged onto Discover, to confirm that a purchase we made earlier today with their card was correct. Of course, if it wasn't I would still have a problem but at least I would be aware right away.
We get alerts every time the Discover or Citi card is used.

Last february we had identity theft. The criminals opened 3 accounts, HSN, a Bill later account, and Best Buy credit card . My credit alert notified me of acct inquiries, and I followed up. Everything was stopped, but it took 3 months of work. HSN told me they stopped the shipping of items BEFORE we were notified. They said a red flag went up when a card was opened, then maxed out (4,500). The big flag came up when the criminals signed us up for UPS my choice, and tried to divert the packages to their address. When I do a bill me,ship to another purchase, which I do a lot, I am notified!
Here is the deal. Because they stopped the shipment of packages to the criminals, HSN didn't pursue prosecution! Never mind an acct was fraudulently opened in my name! I could have pursued criminal charges, but it would have involved dealing with Florida and the state the criminals opened the acct. We dealt with everything through our police dept and Experian.
The other thing. With Bill later act they rented a hotel room. Who would put a 89.00 hotel room from Hotwire on delayed payments.?
I can state that being a member of a credit bureau credit tracking service was the best money we EVER spent. The agents at Experian did everything for us. They councelled, advised us all options. I learned a lot, and we had all inquiries deleted, and a lock put on our account. We even put a "no special offers" warning put on our accounts. This has helped with junk mail, and all those "special offers" you get from credit card companies and mortgage companies.

I always chuckle because I get my ""woo hoo text message"" before the cashier has even handed me my receipts!

I few years ago we had someone purchase a number of items using our Amazon account. They pretty much told me no one could get into the account without me being careless. I removed all information and never ordered another thing.
When I contacted Visa they told me they had a lot of problems with Amazon.
There is a lot of good information on this thread.
I do not understand how to un-authorize someone on PayPal.

I closed my Amazon account 2 years ago. They refused to accept any responsibility when someone accessed my account and purchased a number of gift cards. Nor would they cancel the gift cards. They had the name and the address of the person who did the transaction. A person in TX that worked at a Real Estate Company. They would not refund and said it was on Capital One to cover the costs. They said the person got into my account through Capital One. Capital One was great to work with, not gold star for Amazon.
Amazon used every excuse in the book not to accept any responsibility.
I have not used Amazon since. ![]()
