@chickenbutt wrote:All of a sudden it occurred to me how much money they get for Prime!
If only ONE million people have Prime, that's ONE HUNDRED MILLION dollars! I'd be willing to bet that there are way way way more than just one million customers who have Prime.
It's quite the phenomenon! Sure, they put out money for shipping but when a company is large enough to ship the kind of volume they ship, they also get HUGE discounts from the carriers.
Amazon has certainly been a serious model for retailing! I remember when I first joined Amazon. They were just selling media - books, CDs, etc.
Now, I'm hard-pressed to find that something I seek is not there and the vast majority of the times the price is lower than other sources.
Yep - exactly!
And their outstanding customer service is a bonus.

A lot of people forget that Prime isn't just free shipping. You also get streaming video, streaming music, free books (Kindle First books,) free cloud storage for photos, the Kindle Lending Library, early access to lightning deals, 20% off new video game releases if ordered two plus weeks in advance of release, and access to Amazon Elements line of products.
A subscription to Netflix costs more. A subscription to Pandora's music streaming costs $60 a year and all you get is music streaming. You get at least twelve free Kindle first books that retail for $4.99 each. (On occasion they've let you pick two in one month.) Cloud storage for your photos could cost $20 or more a year. With new video games selling for $60 each just saving 20% on them is $12 every time you order one far enough in advance. If you, your kids order nine games a year, you've paid for Prime. When you look at everything you get, it's a heck of a deal even without the free shipping. Add in the free shipping and it's incredible.

@I checked out that link and read the instructions. Do you know if @Nicknack will be able to watch the Free Amazon Movies etc?
Also, are these movies downloaded as a full programmed recording, or do that have to use streaming to be to watch them?
I got the impression that these would record to her TiVo, but that didn't seem clearly explained to me from what I read.
My Amazon Movie watching, which is via streaming, is strictly the Freebies. I dropped all my Premium Channels with Dish Network as I decided Netflix would be a whole lot cheaper per month.
I have watched several Free Amazon Prime Movies, but only the free ones.
Hey, thanks for helping out with this particular topic, I appreciate your help.

I haven't used the Prime movie streaming recently, because I use Netflix most of the time on my Tivo, but it only streamed and did not download from what I remember when I used it before. Now with Tivo and Netflix you can choose to have Tivo add the Netflix movie to your Tivo "now playing" list, but it doesn't actually download the movie. It's basically just a shortcut.
@jaxs mom This is a really stupid question. Does streaming mean that you have to watch it as it's streaming? You can't download it and watch it later? Does that go for Amazon and Netflix both? I'm not really good at sitting down and watching a movie all the way through without a break or two. I like to be able to stop the movie if I get a phone call and various things.
Streaming like watching live tv in the sense that the content is not stored on your cable box or computer. So no it's not downloaded into the hard drive of your Tivo. But you can pause the streaming content. On Netflix you can also stop watching part way through come back days or weeks later and it remembers where you stopped and asks if you want to continue where you left off or start over from the begining. I can't remember if Amazon movies remember where you stopped or not. It's been awhile.
Thanks for the explanation @jaxs mom.

@chickenbutt wrote:Nick - Here's some more helpful information. Sorry I didn't think about that before...
Go to 'settings and messages', 'settings', 'channels', then 'my video providers'.
That will show you all the video providers that are supported. If you check the ones you use they will go in your 'My Shows' page on the bottom.
You get set up the device to match up to your account, like you set up any other device, and you're ready to go. Just click on 'Amazon Prime' (or whichever one) and it takes you right there.
@chickenbutt I just wanted to let you know that I followed your instructions. My Tivo does get Amazon Prime. Thank you!

I'm not happy with Prime and I've used it for many years. It's taking much longer than 2 days to receive my packages, sometimes a week or more!!
I doubt I'll pay up for another Prime year.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I must have placed my last order just before the minimum went up.
I only purchase things from Amazon that I can't find locally or would take me too long to hunt around for it locally, so my Amazon usage is more for those items. There is only 1 item I buy on Amazon that is cheaper on Amazon (with free shipping) than it is locally (only Harris Teeter and Whole Foods carry it in stores here).
I have looked at Amazon Prime for streaming and books but none of the items I want to read or watch are in Prime right now, so I wouldn't get any value out of that aspect of the membership.
At some point, they will craft Prime for people like me and I will join.
Until then, it has no value for me.

My Prime membership has MORE than paid for itself year after year.In fact I think they actually loose money with me!.......lol I love it !!!

I always use Smile - and try to purchase items that donations are given to the ASPCA. It's thoughtful that you mentioned it. Also, O.com donates to the ASPCA, you just check the box while checking out.

I'm an infrequent Amazon user. Prime is not worth it to me.

$35 minimum to $49 is quite a jump if you ask me. I only order about 6 times a year and have no interest in prime.
I remember when free s/h was $25. When it went up to $35, I often had to buy things I really didn't need yet just to get the free shipping.
One thing I've noticed more and more is that their prices on some items are a lot higher than the same items purchased elsewhere. When that's the case, I don't order from Amazon.
I'll be purchasing less often for sure!
