Am I missing something here?

I have always thought that a "hero" was somebody who risked his own life or did some heroic act to help others. There was a story on my local news, several times already, about a man who was standing outside with his son. Down the street, he saw that a mail truck had been involved in an incident with a car that was trying to pass it.

The 3 people in the car got out and started beating up the mail lady! They were punching and kicking her. She was screaming for help. Well, this man YELLED at the 3 people to stop hitting her! That's ALL he did! He didn't rush down the street to help her or to pull off her attackers. He just YELLED at them to stop hitting her. They finally stopped and sped off.

Now, they are practically parading him down the street! A local politician even came to his house to publicly praise him for being a "hero" and for "saving" the woman's life! The news crews were all there, filming everything. What am I missing here? The mayor wants to give him a special honor!

Has the definition of the word "hero" so drastically changed now? In another story, this week, a delivery truck delivered a package to the wrong address. There was a mix-up between street and ave. Well, the man didn't even open up the package when he saw that it wasn't for him. He looked up the other man's name and called him and told him that his package was delivered to his address by mistake. That's ALL that he did!

I have actually driven to addresses of people whose packages have been delivered to me by mistake, more than once. What is the big deal??? The package contained a VERY expensive watch. The man was so thrilled that the other man didn't keep his watch, and made it a news story. The other man didn't even KNOW what was in the package!!

The news crews were there interviewing him and calling him a "hero" for being so honest!! The man is giving him some expensive gifts. Duh! I swear, I just don't get it! What am I missing here???
