Chronic lateness is just plain rude. I really don't care what the reason is. While in the workplace I was in HR and had to deal with it in a professional manner.

In my personal life I am not that PC! I have a friend who is ALWAYS late. We were going to attend an event that required us to be on time or literally miss the boat.

I was to drive and told her that if she wasn't at my house on time, I was leaving without her. Well she wasn't on time, didn't even call, I left without her after a 15 minute grace period.

Sure enough the boat sailed, pretty soon we looked back and there she was frantically waving from the dock. The captain got on the bullhorn to let her know we would not return for her! She was never late again with me!

Ever notice that they'll try and make you feel as if you're making a big deal over it?

Many years ago, at a personal growth seminar, the leader talked about tardiness.

She said something that nailed it ..... late people are never just late, they are always late BECAUSE .... (fill in the blank with any number of excuses).

I say ....  just don't reward bad behavior.   Start without them, leave without them ... or just exclude them.  Your lowered blood pressure reading will reward you.

I won't name names but...I know someone who is always late for everything and has never apologized - not once.  What's funny is that his sister-in-law runs later than he does and it really makes him mad when he has to wait for her!

Hmmmmmm....... Just wondering if my OCD about being on time so I usually show up early can also be considered a disability?  Don't I have the right to be accommodated as well? I tell people let who are chronically late that I will wait 5 more minutes past our agreed time and if I don't hear from them I will go on to do what we had planned and they could catch up if they want. Less anxiety for me to have my expectation put out front.

Being late is a rude, inconsiderate pattern of behavior that flourishes because it is not punished.  As long as bosses or family or friends give the person a pass it will not stop.  I broke it in my kids by leaving on time and letting them stay home.  They didn't try it again.

That's not OCD.  OCD would be a collection of behaviors that show up and would ultimately interfere with your daily living.

It's not really something to use as a joke, it can be very debilitating.

Thank you for your opinion but I will listen to my doctor's opinion that there are different degrees of different disorders. I totally agree that mental disorders are no laughing matter  and would never demean another person's experience due to my lack of understanding.

It's not my opinion, it's fact.  If you are interested in learning about OCD or ADD, there are a lot of sites online which will explain them for you.  I'm talking about those sites run by foundations working on treatment, staffed by professionals in the field.

Yes, there are different degrees, I already said that eariler.  But the fact that you and I make a habit of being on time is not OCD.

Not to understand either of those conditions, yet to belittle one without understanding what's involved is demeaning it.

I think that for me, the people I've known who are chronically late are NOT late to things that benefit them.  They manage and don't seem to have problems getting it together when it is either their job or something that benefits them directly.

It's just things like meeting to shop or go out to dinner or whatever, with others.   There is always a set time.  Of course, we are always there a little early because my husband is like I am with that.  But they will ALWAYS (and I am not exaggerating) late - anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

It's like 'oh I decided to do this or that on the way' or 'I just wanted to have a drink, cup of coffee, whatever, before I left' - stuff like that which is why it tells me that they disrespect my time and are not concerned with manners.

Now, I could be wrong.  It's just that that is exactly how it feels to me when they do these things because they don't just get all balled up with doing thing or lose track of time.  They just figure they'll get there when they get there and if they want to do something else when they should be at their commitment it just doesn't seem to matter to them.  They don't lose sleep over it.  They don't feel badly about it.  They just make some silly remark and laugh it off like 'too bad, just move on'.

That tends to aggravate me, as I have always known these people enough to truly feel that, in these cases, they are just inconsiderate and disrespectful of the time of other - UNLESS it benefits them.  You know?
