I remember getting 50 cents a week when I was child in the 60s. When I got older I got a whole buck! 😱 We had to keep our rooms clean. I had to help with the dishes and my brother helped with yard work. We were asked to do other things occasionally too.

Did you get an allowance?

Have a Good Week!

@wilma

I don't remember getting an official allowance.  However, my dad would always give me some loose change to put in my piggy bank.  It wasn't much, but I felt rich lol.😃❤️

Fun Question ❤️

So long ago, but I think it was bupkus.  If something special came up and I wasn't a pest about it they usually just gave me what I needed.

My sister and I used to fight over who was going to vacuum the sofa..there was always change there from Dad's pockets after he napped.

I never got an allowance and I worked hard around our home.  My parents had a business that was open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. six days a week so they worked a lot.

I washed and waxed floors on my knees, vacuumed, dusted and kept the house clutter free.  I also cooked for a family of seven and did the dishes.

I cut our large lawn that was on a hill, and trimmed about 30 feet of hedges with hand clippers.

For all of that, I got a place to stay, food, clothing and tutition to a private school.

I started cosmotology school when I was 15.  I went during the summer months and after school on Monday nights during the school year.My parents paid my tutition for that as well.

We went on a four week vacation every summer which was appreciated.

I worked as a shampoo girl after school for two nights and on Saturday mornings.  I made about $15 a week, plus tips.

If I needed money for something, I just asked, sometimes I got it, and sometimes I didn't.

None of my friends got an allowance either, but they all had stay at home moms, so they didn't have chores.

I had more material goods than my friends.  My parents were older and more established, but they were thrifty.

I got a part time job at the front counter of a dry cleaners in high school.  I didn't want to perform the song and dance necessary to buy a magazine or go to a movie.

I don't remember receiving a consistent allowance.

@cheriere

We never had piggy banks. Our father opened savings accounts for us when we were very young. We were expected to put some of our allowance and birthday money in our accounts. We weren't allowed to spend it all.

@Carmie

Wow! You did work hard! A four week vacation sounds like a long time to be away from home, but you definitely deserved it. Our vacations were never more than a week once every summer.

My mom's sister and mother lived with us so my mom had some help. That's probably why I didn't have to do more chores.

No, but we had to work. Lots of farm related chores. However, my parents always gave us the money for things, like going to the movies or the county fair. I guess that was considered our allowance.

@wilma   We had a small house in Cape May, NJ.  My older sister who is 16 years older than me, would take me and my three younger siblings to the beach house for two weeks.

Then she would drive home and our parents would drive down and stay for two weeks.

We, younger kids had to stay for four total weeks....always the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August.

My sister would also take us for a few days here and there.  I was never a beach person, but all my siblings are.

I am the only fair skin child and I burn.  I hate sitting on the beach all covered up.  My two sisters still tease me about it.

I am heading to Cape May in a few weeks.  I love it there, but won't be doing any beach sitting.
