I one of 8 kids in a  (previous)  catholic family.

Most of us are named after parent's siblings or their parents, one for a kind elderly neighbor. Im named after my mom's little sister. All are saints names lol. 

Back in the 1800s and such, I've noted doing our geneology that relatives seemed to name people after relatives over and over ...makes for research to be difficult as I had to concentrate on which generation or cousin I was looking at when reading records.

@Patriot3  .. I knew your nic was about the USA... but thought maybe there some something else behind it.  Can't mention it because this post would be deleted. LOL  I haven't been to Italy since June 2024.   One of my cousins and his family came here in April 2024.   It's nice to meet you too!

I was given the most popular girl name for the 1970s.  It is Jennifer.  I have never liked it.  My oldest sister (15 years older) told me as soon as I could sting a sentence together I would tell people "I am Jenny".  I have recently learned my middle name was the first name of my great grandma on my Daddy's side.

@JFD12 our daughters name!  She never met another one until she graduated college.  The worked in the same place.

My first and middle names aren't tied into a family member's name on either side.  I never thought to ask my parents how they came up with it.

I do know my brother's name, if he had been a girl would have been Debbie.  By the time I was born, a cousin had that name so they came up with a different name for me.

Indeed they are but I believe my GM was not aware that viola is a flower.  DM's sisters didn't become Rose or Iris either, just Edith and Evelyn lol.

I also hate how the name "Karen" has become a slur.  I really thought that it would die down by now but it seems that it has only grown particularly online.  It's a really nice name but has been vilified!

In many comments sections I can't help from commenting back.  Why is that name become such a pariah?  I would hate that if it were my name!

@haddon9.  I'm with you on the "Karen" thing.   I frequently jump on someone (always a man) online for using it.  It nearly kills them that a woman has a strong opinion about something.

Italian people also named their babies for a deceased relative...I refused to...I would have never named my son Pasquale(Patsy)!..The closest I got was Patrick.

Our last name is Irish...DH would have never tolerated Pasquale...LOL
