@I am still oxox I was named after my paternal grandfather who passed just before I was born.  He was David Harry so if I had been a boy I would have been David.  They chose Diane.

I hated my name as it was different and not cool to be different like today. I longed for a normal... Debbie, Patty, Susan, Carol etc. My middle name had to be Jean after my Godmother/Mother's sister, Imogene. She told me the family laughed hearing it when they were called on the phone. It was her Doctor's wife's name,  (Georgia.) I was an only child.

The second choice was Rebecca and I longed for it.  Becky was normal.Third was Molly and dubbed too old fashioned by my Grandma. My Mother said it was pretty and I'd like it when I grew older. My Dad could have cared less and Mom was boss. Mother disliked George as a nickname and said NOT my name.

I was teased in school, having a boy's name and Georgy Porgy. It is the female version of George (English)that means farmer. I hated writing the capital letter G and thought it was ugly. I use a small g and enlarge it on my signature today.

My beautiful daughter's name. Love it! Now becoming more common but not when she was younger.

I was named after my father's sister who died when she was 13.  As a child I was so afraid of having the same fate so I dreaded turning 13 but I made it many many years past  that age lol.  My grandmother said she was going to name all her female children after flowers, my mother, being the firstborn was to be Violet.  However, GM said after taking a look at her when she was born she was no flower and named her Viola instead.  She had 2 more daughters, none of which were flowers either.Woman LOL

Huh?   Violas are flowers.

My name is one of the most popular of the Fifties.  According to my mother, my father suggested the shorter version of the name so I would have less to write.  He was practical that way.

But she hinted that he chose the name because he was so smitten with a certain actress at the time.

My father named both my sister and myself. My mother wanted to call me Gayla Lee.  Dad chose Patricia Ann.  I love my name. But it was quickly changed to Pat which I don't like but I've lived with all these years. My husband and my parents both called me Patty a lot.  I did like that.

There are 6 of us.  When my Mom was in school, the Nuns said you should give your children good, strong names that will look good on a diploma.  So we have names like a James, Patricia, John but as kids always had nicknames - Jimmy, Trish, Jack.  My oldest sister has the middle name Mary and mine is Ann, another Catholic tradition.  No one is named after either of my parents or grandparents.  My maternal grandmother was  named Wihlomena, so I'm pretty happy we didn't follow that tradition!

Hi @Patriot3 ..... Like your nic!   Hope it means what I think it means!    Anyway, my family is from the central part of Italy in the Marche region.   My paternal grandparents and parents all came to the USA from there.  My maternal grandfather was here during WWI and worked for the American Government making the wood part of guns.  He was a carpenter.  He returned to Italy after the war.  The maternal side of my family remained in Italy.   I  have three first cousins and their families there.  We are all still very close.

@Boehm Collector  Thanks, the nic is in honor of the USA.  Your story is interesting.  Love hearing stories like this about Italy.  I wish I knew of family still in Italy.  Most of them came over here.  Nice to meet you.

My name is very unusual with only a handful nationwide sharing it.  My parents swore they couldn't remember where it came from, surely nobody in the family.  I find it hard to believe they wouldn't remember.  I was the first child.

Ok. Now we need hints. I spilled my name which is Mary Elizabeth  Smiley Happy

When I was young I always wished my name was Mary.

I'm pretty sure my mother named us kids after actors who were popular at the time.
