Nothing is wrong with society.  How does comment by neighbors equal societal problem?  I'm kinda wondering what their exact comment were that appear to have set you on edge.  I've gotten that comment many times it's usually said in lieu of " you look nice."  Why would you look for a negative?

I get this comment quite a bit;  have concluded it's b/c I don't wear pants when I'm out and about.  Long ago, realized that my figure is not flattered by pants, but looks its best in skirts.

This seems to surprise some people, but that's fine.  I enjoy having my own individual style.  To me, what I wear is quite casual most of the time-- jean skirts, twill skirts, sweaters, colorful tops, flats, jewelry.  Maybe a bit like a Nancy Drew character cliimbing into her little roadster, but hey, that's me.

What seems a wee bit deadening to me is that there now seems to be almost a fixed expectation (with some) that women will dress in a certain predictable way.  I love it when I see interesting variations...  especially more mature women who don't "fall into line" sartorially...

I wish more people dressed nice these days. Everywhere I go, its shapeless tops and too tight capris or  sausage casing leggings!    Do people just wear their clothes to bed and then get up and go out!? the men too. never see a sharp-dressed man (lol)

I like to create nice outfits with color,  jewelry, handbag, shoes.  I love the head-to-toe look.  I know I stick out sometimes and get the side eye from women.   I find I'm editing myself now because the area here is verrry casual. I no longer wear dresses or skirts, because I can't wear a nice heel anymore. I wear mostly comfy athletic type shoes and use a cane for stability and that attracts attention as well. So I would look really ditzy limping around in heels.

It's nice to care what you wear. White pants, nice top add some jewerly and they thought you are dressed. At home I wear faded jeans, sneakers & look a mess, when DH says let's go to lunch I put makeup on and change because I would never leave the house looking like this. Next time see if they dress different. My DD wears TJ Maxx  & fake jewerly (not much money) she is young & puts it together. I always say make an effort you never know. I see young girls that look bad, no desire or effort to even want to do something.

That was a back-handed compliment.  They just feel as happy with their outfits, but really liked yours. LOL

@CatsyCline I was born with a club foot. It was repaired when I was a baby , but due to that fusion I have never been able to wear heels. Why do you think you have to wear heels to wear a dress?

I often see ladies wearing maxi dresses with flats at our local art fairs and farmer's markets. They always look nice and appear comfortable, heels are

overrated.

I thought this was a passing comment from her neighbors. Not really something to over-analyze
