Maybe your friends wished they had dressed up a little more.

I understand where you are coming from. If I showed up to dinner at a restaurant to meet friends they would consider that dressed up. Even eating out most people are in jeans or capris and a t-shirt this time of year, at least around here. I do own one maxi dress and only wear it when I am on vacation somewhere. In our area everyone lives a very casual lifestyle even when eating out. I would not mind having to get dressed up once in awhile though.

I am the only person in my office that wears dresses or skirt outfits to work 99% of the time. It's a law office too. Most of the others look okay, no one looks outstanding and a few are now wearing yoga pants - go figure. The Yoga pant wearers look as though they are going to the mall or sit outside somewhere and that 's putting a positive spin on things. I don't know what happened - guess they are "comfortable." Personally, I wish they would put a little more thought and effort into their work outfits. Wonder what they dress down in while not here?

That's not society. That's just the people you hang with....lol Granted, people do dress much more casually today but your outfit is just as casual as jeans and tee. It's just more appropriate for the weather. Having said that; I hear that from one particular person all the time. I like to dress up and sometimes I do over dress a bit. I'd rather look good.....than not good enough...lol

Maybe to some any time a woman wears a dress it's considered "dressed up" more so than wearing a pair of capris.

Sounds like a pretty outfit, but the crochet shrug probably appeared "lacey" so maybe that's why you got the dressed up comment.
You didn't mention what type of restaurant or what the others were wearing. The women probably just threw something on ..... and later felt underdressed. Not your problem. JMO

When I wear a dress because it's cooler than any sort of pants, my DH will say "what are you all dressed up for" so I do think for some people just the idea of wearing a dress or skirt is being dressed up.

Then add a crocheted shrug and jewelry and, sure looks like you made the effort to be 'dressed up'!

I think being very dressed down for all occasions is what is in right now. I personally feel like you should just dress how you feel and what suits your own sense of fashion, style and what is appropriate for an occasion no matter how big or small. Fashion should be a personal style and you shouldn't feel like you have to do what anyone else does nor should you worry about others opinions. It is not going to change the world one way or another. Fashion should be fun and enjoyed. I am sure you looked fabulous and hopefully you felt great!

3 people are not "society." I would not pass judgement on "society" at large because 3 of your friends consider wearing a dress "dressed up".
