Gosh, we're lucky here in Arizona. We just go online and renew. The last time I went in person was 5 years ago after my cataract surgery to get a new picture without glasses. We don't even have to go to the DMV. We have affiliates that for a few bucks more do the same thing but without the wait. In and out in 20 minutes.

@Meowingkitty  I think that could be done in some States if you are an American Citizen. But once you reach the age of 64 or older you have to visit DMV to do a vision test. Those that have a vision report on file, can renew on line.

For years I did mine on line so I never aged and had on the same outfit lol.

We're both over 64 and we did ours online. No vision test required.

Can you please explain updating your driver's license to a state ID.  There have been many state departments in my state that have cut back hours and days of operation.

@monicakm - the state ID or REAL ID is for identity verification.  My understanding is that everyone is supposed to have one.  Originally there was a deadline set prior to Covid but it got extended to May 7, 2025.  A star in the upper right corner of one's driver's license designates that it's a REAL ID.  A REAL ID will be required for interstate airline travel and to access certain federal buildings on May 7th.  We're flying next month so I just want to be on the safe side and get it now.

Well well, gtk. I guess I need to add this to my to-do list. Thanks for the heads up.

Although I've renewed my license online whenever possible, I had to do it in person the last time. Instead of just going down to DMV as I usually did, I made an appointment. What a difference! Instead of the hours-long duration that I was used to, I was out of there in 20 minutes. I recommend this if it's an option in your state. In addition to the shorter wait time, you won't be able to make an appointment if the office is closed.

When renewing my licence I also had my documentation for the Real ID.  My birth certificate with seal and all was not accepted.  I was told I had to contact the state where I was born to get the papers I needed.  I did that and was told it would be $100 for them to send it to me!  I decided to just renew my expired passport rather than waste money on the birth certificate the DMV required.  Back I went with my new passport.  Very annoying.

Since DMV's are state offices, their hours of operation along with procedures can be different in different states. Our state limits how many times you can renew on line so at some point you have to go in and get a new eye exam, etc.  That's the point I had encountered after renewing the maximum times I could renew on line.

If my dog doesn't like you, neither do I.

I've always renewed my license on line in Georgia including updating my address and misplacing my license. Once I turned 64 it couldn't be done so I had to visit the DMV for a vision test.

Re: All Dressed and Nowhere to Go 🫤

Can't you do it online?  A couple of months ago hubby thought he lost his driver's license. He could find it anywhere.  He went online to DMV and requested a replacement.  When you fill out the form and the computer accepts it, you get document that verifies that you have completed the necessary form for new license.  That's what you show in the event you are stopped and must show your license.  I was impressed with the process.  He received his new license three weeks late.   But the kicker is.....    He found his license under some papers on his desk at work a few days after he requested the replacement.
