My heart is broken from losing my 18 yr. old female cat on Sept. 3. We have another girl but this one was just so sweet and loving. We've lost cats before and always got another, but I don't think I will get any more. I know they are great companions but I just can't bear to go through the loss any more.

LORI K- I'm so sorry for your loss. I am going through the same. I have been crying all week.We, too have had another dog but there is just not the big bond there was with Bo and right now I can't see myself getting another. I'm like you, I can't stand the thought of going through this again! Maybe at some point we'll change our minds... who knows. Take care!!

I am sorry you have lost your loved pet...we lost our dog about 6 weeks before Memorial Day this year. We waited about 3 month before getting another puppy. The house was just so quiet without a dog running around, they are so much company as well. Another reason for getting a new puppy so soon was that we did not want to house break a puppy in the fall/winter time. Our pup is now house broken and we can let her run a bit by herself in the back yard.....we love her!

Momtodogs- I'm happy for you! Good thinking about getting a pup before fall. I just have to add that our 3 little stair-step neighbor kids came over today with a little calla Lilly and said they were sorry about Bo- SO sweet!!!

I'm sorry for your loss, when I lost my first cat in a fire, I waited almost 1 1/2 years, then when the second cat died from medical issues, I had not had that cat as long and I waited like 4-5 months and I went to the shelter. My recommendation...wait a while, don't rush but go to the shelter. SO many pets need a home.

To the OP and others who have lost their babies ... I'm very sorry for your losses. We're usually a multi-dog family and as an earlier poster said that can help soften the blow of losing one ... but we still usually add to the family within a few months of losing one of our babies. This year has been particularly tough though ... we've lost 3 dogs in 9 months and I'm still so numb from the back to back to back losses that I'm not sure when I can face bringing a new dog into the family. It's been almost two months since I lost my sweet boy and I'm still crying almost every night when I head to bed. My husband knows how hard this has ben on me and encourages me to get another dog - but I seem to change my mind everyday about whether or not the time is right. One more thing I've got to consider is our remaining dog. She got along great with our other dogs, but isn't a fan of strange dogs. I'm not sure I want to deal with any of those issues right now. I'm sure when the time is right, we'll all give our hearts to another 4-legged baby again ... probably more than one.

Sunshine, I totally agree about going to shelters and I'm positive they know that they've been rescued, they always make such great pets!!

Wahoogaz- I am so very sorry for what you have been through. We are still crying everyday. It has only been 9 days since I lost my Bo and it seems like months. I'm like you- I about dread bedtime too. I'm not ready yet, though the house is SO empty. I wish you well and you will find another, your other dog may do better than you think!

Just a word of caution...

When I found my new friends, they were at different rescues. I had to complete a four page application for each, and wait for it to be approved before I could visit with any animal. If there is a rescue organization nearby, you might want to fill out the application now so if you find someone who might be a match, he/she doesn't get away while you're waiting for approval. They might also notify you if a new dog comes in that might make a good match.
