Do you think they are necessary? Do you think they're oppressive? Do you believe only certain professions should have dress codes? What do you think should be the dress code for an office? School?

If a profession, business, school etc. want to portray a specific image they have every right to require a dress code for the the time spent representing them. As to what that may be is up the the company or school. I have gone into offices and seen people walking around in flip flops, not instilling confidence even if it is "casual Friday".

Someday, when scientists discover the center of the Universe....some people will be disappointed it is not them.

I don't think they're oppresive, and they can be necessary for any employer/administration wanting to make sure their employees convey a certain image. It's my experience that you can't rely on people to reasonably interpret what that means in a sensible way, so dress codes can either remove the personal interpretation element (if specific enough) or at least guide it appropriately.

Having said that, I am not subject to a formal dress code at my company because I'm not customer facing. I like the freedom and flexibility, and while I do take care to maintain a professional appearance, I have worked in both types of environments and much prefer this one. I definitely see people abusing it though.

Having managed several offices, I've observed that often employees don't exercise a lot of common sense when selecting their wearing apparel. However, if you ever try to write a dress code, you will pull your hair out. You try to think of each and every possible violation, but somebody will come up with something inappropriate that you never thought about including in the written code. My favorite was the young lady, a recent college graduate, who came to work in a jump suit made of a flowered calico fabric that was gathered on a band at the ankle. She looked exactly like Little Bo-Peep.

YES, they are definitely necessary.

Just go for a walk in various public settings and people watch. You'll see that it's pretty obvious that a LOT of people don't know how to dress appropriately ... even to church, funerals, and other more significant events. Totally clueless. (Where were their mothers when they were growing up?)

The Employer gets to decide about dress codes. If they are dealing with the public every day, it's their call. There's really nothing "oppressive" about it.

I have to laugh at young peoples' complaints that they should be able to "express themselves" any way they want. Where did they ever come up with such a crazy idea?

IMO, when you are on the Employer's time, being paid to do any number of functions, they make the call. If you don't like it, you're always free to quit.

When I was teaching, my focus was clothing that: washable, modest even with my arms over my head or if I was bent over, nice colors or matching, seasonable and comfortable.

Shoes had to be close toed and flat; if you ever had a 12 year old boy trip and land on your feet you'd understand.

I tried to be fashionable, but not too trendy.

They are definitely necessary at times. Have worked with people who obviously have no idea how they look - wearing see-through white tight stretch pants with thong underwear. Hmmm. She was called into office, sent home and told to come back dressed appropriately. Sent home more than once.
