Adopting First Time in a Long Time, Kitty or Dog First?

No pets at home currently and I've been thinking of adopting, first time in ages since DS is out on his own. I've had German Shepherds previously and am considering one (or two {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}).

But for the first time, I'm also considering a cat or kitten. Our local shelter is a no-kill shelter if they believe the animal is adoptable and there are so many precious furbabies.

So for those of you experienced Pet Parents, which would you adopt first, cat or dog?

Does it matter? Any thoughts?
