Born to Shop,  as I watched the Patriots and their owner/coach bask in glory today at the White House, all I could think of was what twist of fate - perversion of one's nature? -- whatever it was -- had the Patriot family celebrating joyfully on the same day that a former teammate took his own life.

What took Aaron Hernandez down another, horrific path?  Push me off the boards for being an old fogie, but I think that when a young and impressionable population ingests much violence and not too much spiritual and aesthetic beauty, personalities become estranged, unloving, sociopathic.

I put a lot of what has destroyed the American fabric that held together so many noble generations at the feet of Madalyn Murray O'Hair..  I feel I must hasten to add that I am not a Bible-thumper, but disseminating loving thoughts of compassion and goodness had a salutary effect on most.  Higher-minded thoughts that inspire us to do better, help others and love our fellow man have a definite effect.  Their absence also has an effect.

Also to blame -- BIG TIME! -- are Hollywood and all the art forms that have celebrated cruelty, ugliness, grossness and fostered contempt for one's fellow man.  I know, I know, many are now angry with me, but you've only to look at some of the films from the 1940s or listen to music from previous eras to know that what the folks at that time heard, saw and learned was on a more refined level.  There was a kind refinement and love apparent that is missing now.  This is not to say that there are no longer works of art that are sensitive to the "human condition" and inspire, but they are uncommon, I think.

Okay, I said my piece.

..."But, while rarely used, “abatement ab initio” has successfully wiped clean the records of some convicts, notably in the case of Enron CEO Kenneth Lay.

After Lay died of a heart attack in 2006 — after his conviction but prior to his sentencing for fraud — the doctrine wiped his criminal record clean. The government lost access to $44 million in victim restitution, and his estate went to his family.

So whatever’s left of Hernandez’s NFL millions, including a $1.5 million mansion in a Boston suburb, may now belong to his 4-year-old daughter, Avielle, and her mother, Shayanna Jenkins, to whom Hernandez was engaged at the time of his death."

Such an archaic law. MA has been trying to get it off the books for years, but since that has not happened yet, the vacate rule will apply.

I guess that affects the civil lawsuits the families are in the process of. The Quincy MA lawyer that represents the families says the case will still go forward.

The person that has baffled me through all of this is his girlfriend. She has stuck by him through all the trials, brought his baby to the jail every week, (well, not a baby anymore, she is now 4), called him daily. She was in the courtroom every single day for both trials.

I would see her and think "why? Why are you doing this to yourself and an innocent child?". No rhyme or reason to it. There was no future whatsoever for her with him. She is 26 years old.

It is not like she got to keep his big house she was living in with him. Everything he owned was sold to pay for all these high price lawyers. The Patriots did not have to pay off his contract, so I don't think he had gobs of money to begin with. He played 3 seasons at a rather low (for football) rookie salary. He had just signed a 40 million dollar contract when he got arrested, but he didn't get but a portion of it.

I just do not understand the gf. Who wants a boyfriend that is a murderer?

Edited to add: Tom said is was important he spend the day with his Mom today. I hope she is not at the end. SHe is very sick. She looked awful at the Superbowl. Although my son said Brady did not attend the White House event the last time either. Brady is a friend of Trump's, so I imagine his mother reason is valid.

I certainly hope his mother is holding her own.  What I heard this morning was that his wife does not like DT so Brady stayed away, along with other teammates.

I do not believe this was a suicide at all. He was discovered dead at 3:00 am in his cell. He was overjoyed last week when found innocent on two murders counts, I think one or more persons were not so happy about it. You can  try to make a murder appear to be a suicide but it will be shown in an autopsy. It will show wheter he was dead before being hanged. I am not a fan of his but this does not sound right to me.

I totally agree with you. I seriously doubt he would take his own life!

@tansy I read his mom never attended 2nd trial, I watched alot of it and I never saw her there.

Bill B said he's been to WH 5 times and a dozen or so players skip the WH every year, and this is the 1st time the media are trying to make hay.

@Nomorebirthdays I find this a bit suspicious.
