Re: AOL: 10 Most Likely States For Cancer

@ECBG Hope you are well sweet girl!  Phew!  Va wasn't on there!  I was just thinking that I've heard of people my age who have or had lung cancer and never smoked.  But their parents smoked in the house when they were growing up.

I was lucky.  My Father wasn't allowed to smoke in the house and he didn't drive so I was never around it at all.  I've never even handled a cigarette.  I was taught it is a filthy habit by my Aunt I lived with.  She had OCD.  Life was interesting!

Vermont and Maine surprise me but I don't know why.

Re: AOL: 10 Most Likely States For Cancer

i just skimmed thru the list, how Delaware escaped the list is beyond me. Cancer rate in Delaware is so very high.  My DD was diagnosed with cancer in May-June of 016, surgery was done September 016. Now it is yearly full body scans to see if the cancer ever comes back.  This came out of the woodwork, she never ever smoked (dh and I are not smokers--we were but quit long before DD was born).

I took a look at it, and at first, it appeared that the top states were ones where there was more tobacco use...but then a few states appeared that seemed to throw that theory out the window.  Noel...is that why you thought Maine and Vermont wouldn't be in the top ten?

Not surprised that my state is #3.  Too many smokers here or people that smoke cigars or chew tobacco.  Not to mention that health seeking behaviors by people in this state are less than to be desired too.

Yes, that's what I thought @september

I would think CA has problems from all the freeways and traffic, but then again, we do have so many restrictions on gasoline additives.

I think of Vermont and Maine as fresh air, environmental awareness and hearty workers, as with the lobster fishers, but what do I know, I haven't been to either state.

Maybe high rates of depression with long, cold winters.

The article doesn't give enough details, but it seems to be about mortality, rather than incidence.  "Maybe" more people in these New England states, wait too long after symptoms appear before seeking treatment.  Early detection=a greater chance of successful treatment
