Wow, thanks for posting this update info.  I heard about it for the first time on the evening news today.  I live in a small town that has little real news in the daily newspaper--mainly local gossip.  Never received any email from amazon, but I have an old Kindle Keyboard.  It has been connected to WiFi a few times since October, but only long enough to download a new book.  I use my Kindle strictly for reading on battery power.  So I ran to get it, and it's now connected to WiFi and plugged in.  Hope I've done it in time since it will be March 22 at midnight!  Don't even know if I need the update, but plugged it in anyway since I'm not tech savvy and would probably have problems downloading anything manually. That's how it goes when you grow up in the typewriter age.

@CJC  You need to do a little more than plug it in.  Here's the instructions from Amazon.

Update Your Kindle E-Reader via Wi-Fi

If your Kindle e-reader does not have the latest software version, connect your device to Wi-Fi to receive the software update.

To update your Kindle once connected to Wi-Fi:

  1.  From the Home screen of your Kindle, select Menu or tap the Menu icon, and then choose Sync and Check for Items.
  2. Plug your Kindle in, and leave your Kindle plugged in and connected to a Wi-Fi network overnight.

While asleep, the software update will download and install automatically. Your device may restart multiple times during the update process.

You will get a final confirmation letter titled 03-2016 Successful Update on your device when the update is complete. You can find the letter on your device by viewing all items in your Kindle Library, and then sorting the items by Recent.

If you’re not sure if your device has the latest version, go to Determine Your Kindle E-Reader Software Version.

If hillside window down and go into device it will have an update button, but this is on my KINDLE FIRE HD 8.9, and 7.9.  I think it only applies to readers, but there should be an update button under device.

I have done all of this twice but it never says anything in my library about an update. How can I tell if it worked? I put them in order of most recent but there is nothing there about an update.
