ACS Daffodil Days - Program Cancelled

The popular American Cancer Society Daffodil Days program has been cancelled. I just heard this today for the first time. 2013 was the last year.

I am so disappointed, as I officially kicked off spring with A Bear and a Bunch for a $25.00 donation every year. I have a pretty good collection of little Boyd's Bears because of this program and enjoyed brightening my house with the daffodils.

The official statement from the ACS website states, "Because the program is limited to just a few areas, it is no longer possible to sustain the kind of nationwide support needed to make this initiative a cost effective way for the Society to raise funds and awareness for the fight against this life threatening disease. For this reason, 2013 will be the final year for our Daffodil Days program."

I've decided to continue to send them my donation, but this time I will also make a trip to the local florist for the daffodils, sorely needed after this long, cold winter.

Too sad - when I was still working I would get hundreds of my coworkers to participate in this every year. It was so joyful each spring to deliver the flowers and esp. to deliver the ones that went to cancer patients. It was a lot of work every year and was my very great pleasure to do it. And, yes, i am a cancer survivor - twice.

I work for a large company and every year it was such a thrill to see boxes and boxes of beautiful daffodils delivered. It meant that spring was on its way. Our company always made it such a big deal, setting up displays in the cafeteria to donate and again when it was time to pick up the flowers and/or bears. Many people donated their bears to cancer patients which helped to cheer them up.

I remember this from my working days, too. We didn't have the bears, just bought the bunches of daffodils for $10 a bunch.

I was in the grocery the other day and they had them for $8 a bunch and they were already completely open so I passed on them.

Went to Trader Joe's and they had bunches of 10 for $1.49! They were still just buds, too. Bought three and put two away in the veggie drawer of the refrigerator for later. (With a wet paper towels around the bottom and in their origina sleeve from the store they will last for about 2 weeks.) They really are a sign of Spring!

People make a donation to the American Cancer Society and they get a dozen daffodils or they can designate for the flowers to go to a cancer patient. It was a great fundraiser and just such a cheerful thing to do each spring. I guess since i retired they could get flowers or a teddy bear.

I'm going to go to TJ's tonight or tomorrow night. I hope they have daffodils as I'd love to bring some spring into my house, regardless of these sub-zero temps, LOL. Thanks for the tip.
