It is wise to check your accounts daily.  Although my account is updated online daily the minute changes occur, I still check.  The online alerts are good to have too.

I check my checking accounts and savings account on-line every single day and make sure everything is okay.  I had my debit card numbers lifted more times than I can remember and it generally starts with very small amounts because they "test" the card.  But there was one-time there was an over $500.00 charge made.

I've been questioning the need for overdraft protection tied to checking accounts.  Do you have it - O/D protection?  Losing $28 is nothing compared to $28,000 and if you have O/D protection you could stand to be out a substantial sum of money.

Of course I don't keep $28k in my checking account so please, everyone,  no comments on how stupid that would be.

@JillyMarie, we used to have OD protection and we dropped it.  More than once when our debit card numbers were lifted, the thieves were able to overdraft our account because of that protection.

DH and I went into the bank and signed papers telling them to remove it.  We would never overdraft our account and without that OD protection, it would at least limit how much they could take and our account wouldn't go into the negative.

Thank you for the heads up.  Last week I noticed an issue in my PayPal account.  I had received a payment from an unknown source for over a $1,000; then it was w/d from my account.  Seems they ripped off someone and deposited into my account, then withdrew her funds from my account.  Nothing affected me financially, but just plain scary.  The convenience of online banking/charge card purchases/pay pal etc. is great, but these reports remind us to keep a watch.

Or that could have been some type of money laundering

I also have alerts set up for every transaction....makes it easy to keep track......and I do reconcile my bank statement....it might be considered old fashioned but in these times you can't be too careful......

Here's something else to be aware of, slightly off topic but along the same lines.  If you've given someone a check and they use the "take a picture to deposit it" they can after 6 months take that same check and deposit the actual check.  Per my bank, there is no safeguard against it after 6 months.  Hence, the reason if you do the take a picture to deposit, they tell you to hang onto the check for 6 months and then destroy it.

this is the reason why i check all of my accounts DAILY.....even the ones that dont get used much (credit cards and bank accounts.) the faster you catch it, the easier it is to take care of.......

it definitely gives me more peace of mind.

I check all of mine daily too. Bank accounts, credit cards, etc.   I look at every charge no matter how small.  It just takes a couple of minutes at most, and - as you said - it definitely gives me peace of mind.

I also have alerts for my credit cards so I know every time a charge is made, usually within just a couple of minutes.

I get e-mails like this all the time.  I delete them and move on.  They are always from a bank I don't deal with.
