A response to your question regarding this month

I can understand how it might be confusing to children growing up today. They are sent a lot of different and maybe conflicting messages regarding equality and diversity.

I think this month was important when I was growing up in the 80's and 90's because so many were still recovering from segregation and the civil rights eras. The message during civil rights was for equality for all mankind, and we have come so far in the last two generations.

Now we have a brand new generation of children whom might not be aware of all of the changes that our country has gone through in the last century. I think most educators (I hope anyway) are striving to teach children that we are equal, and that it is only the content of our character that makes us different. I think that confusion might come in when we try to teach them about diversity based on ethnicity. Perhaps over time, we'll be able to move past our ethnic differences and focus more on our history as Americans.

I think your question is very interesting and one that a lot of people are afraid to ask. I have a feeling that you were fishing for a serious answer, so I am giving you a serious response, although, I don't know if there is a right answer to your question.
