A question about Tucson tragedy

I was as apalled as anyone about the Tucson tragedy and about Rep. Giffords critical condition but I have a practical question that I haven't seen discussed anywhere in the media. Since Rep. Giffords is appointed to a 2 yr term, at what point will someone else be appointed to fill her position? Or do her constituents go unrepresented? Since I assume the Republican govenor would make the appointment, would her successor be a Republican or a Democrat (especially in this tense situation)?
