Hi everyone -
I'm having a really tough time right now and wanted to ask you for advice and suggestions. My dog had abdominal surgery 2 weeks ago because he was vomiting for a few days. They opened him up to find nothing, except he was irritated inside. I ended up taking him to another vet hospital the other night because he was in a lot of pain. Took him for an ultrasound yesterday and he was swollen inside and a hematoma or abscess had formed underneath the incision site. The vet there said that surgery never should have been performed before an ultrasound was done. She was also floored that the vet who did the surgery did not do a biopsy when he opened my poor dog up. I feel like an awful owner. I love my dog so much and do everything I can to protect him, and he's been to heck and back over the last few weeks. He's only 3 years old. And I, by no means, am made of money. I've spent thousands of dollars over the last 2 weeks and I cry knowing that he didn't need the surgery. Not only that, but he is having complications from the surgery that are costing me more money. Here's the question - can I say something to the emergency vet who performed the surgery? Do you think they would compensate me anything? At least the bill at the new vet where they are repairing their mistake? I am not one to sue or do anything drastic, I am just very upset and feel that they are greatly responsible for a lot of these problems. According to the vet yesterday, she said my dog probably only had a gastro bug that was exascerbated by this surgery. Sorry for the long post - I'm just exhausted, angry, but most of all, concerned for my dog and I want to do what is best and just for him. Any advice or suggestions you can give are much appreciated. Thanks for reading.
