@on the bay - What a wonderful experience to have been in such a special parade! I can't believe it snowed one year! That must have made the parade even more special, even though you must have been freezing! Did you all wear beautiful kimonos?

@Stray - The drums?  Now that is really something!  I found the Japanese culture to be "big" on drums. They were everywhere! I will think of you and your drums when I put on my earrings. We're getting closer, although it's still too cold for me!   Smiley Happy

@beach-mom - yes, it's feeling better out but not warm enough for me.  I don't like extreme heat either.  The drum class was fun & you work up a sweat.  I tried to find a class here in NJ as we have a large Asian community but mostly, Korean, not Japanese.  At the tennis club, I asked some Japanese ladies about drum classes but never found one

Re: A GIFT FOM JAPAN

[ Edited ]

When I was growing up my parents took us the Washington D.C. numerous times. And many times we were to see the Cherry Blossoms. We also saw the sights too. But they always timed the visits so we could try and see the trees in bloom. We always seemed to be too early or too late.

So fast forward many years and we had our son. Time to visit Washington D.C. and visit to see the cherry blossoms.

As what happened too many times when I was younger. We drove down to Washington D.C. in pouring rain the night before. We stayed in a hotel by the Potomac River. Went for a walk the next day. The ground was literally covered in pink petals no longer on the trees.

We went other times but stayed on the Mall.

I love that Japan is gifting the US 250 more trees.

That is so nice of them.  I ordered my 250th ball cap, should be here any day now.  I think I may even wear it to my office!!!

I haven't heard where the trees are going to be planted.

@beckyb1012 ,  that's great, I didn't know there were 250th birthday ball caps!  Great idea for gifts, and they will surely be considered collector's items in future.

From Town & Country:

According to DC 250“The new cherry blossom trees will be planted in phases around the Tidal Basin and other prominent areas in the District, including the U.S. National Arboretum and Anacostia Park. Visitors can expect even more spectacular displays of blossoms in the coming years as the trees mature.” In 1912, the mayor of Tokyo gave 3,000 cherry blossom trees to the city of DC, and they were planted around the Tidal Basin. Now, the cherry blossom trees have become a major tourist attraction, especially during peak bloom season.

I love the Japanese people. Our first year being stationed there right when the trees bloomed it was so windy it blew all the blossoms blew off.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.
