I hear you...the night nurses seemed more out of it than the day shift nurses that I had and the night nurses are the ones I needed more right after surgery. It shouldn't be that way at all. If my DH didn't stay overnight with me I don't know what i would have done.

He should not have had to do what he did for me.

I was just pointing out what they told me.

Yeah, well, it's a shame. A friend was in the hospital not long ago for about a week and she had family there ALL THE TIME, they stayed in shifts. They said they didn't trust the staff to be there for her. And with good reason.

That isn't right at all. Makes you wonder why they have a sleeping area in the room for a family member.

I noticed also at night they seemed to have one nurse and one aide. That was it....how you can possibly take care of post surgery patients like that?

I worked the night shift for a year and a half. Neuro/Ortho. When they left me totally and completely alone to care for 13 patients, I quit and moved to the day shift on cardiac. It was totally unsafe what they did. Did the nurse manager help me out? H€ck no.

That's if they don't have to work mandatory overtime.

A lot of hospitals do that now...to cut down on the costs of hiring more staff.

The children's hospital near my home WANT family to stay overnight...in fact, most hospitals have cots or sleeping chairs for family now.

I used to see news stories about 3rd world countries where families had to do the nursing.

It's getting more common here!

That is awful!!! You had to not only be exhausted but felt so outnumbered. You are human after all. Glad you got out of there!
