I don't remember seeing the age of the plane, but they did say there was damage repair to a wing (the tip, if I remember correctly) not long ago. I imagine sorting out liability, even if the wreckage is found, could be complicated.
I believe it was two years ago, the wing was clipped on the ground, other than that it had no history of any serious maintenance issue.

That's just plain insulting. They will get more through many lawsuits. However, all the money in the world wont bring back their loved ones. That's the saddest part of all.
By the way my husbands best friend from school was killed in a plane crash in NY years back. (My husband will never fly because of this). But they knew why it happened.
Sadly these people don't know what went wrong, and may never know.

Well they will have to do it eventually, but right now, the families should have carte blanche, ok maybe not but a reasonable sum to carry them through the year at the very least. They've been through h@ll and back.
Yes they have been through H and back, SydneyH. But, still 5,000 doesn't seem right at all.
DustyPink, It appears the $5,000 is only one payment to defray some costs right now, in addition to accommodations they've been paying for since the disappearance of the flight. Truly, as you say, there's no price that can be given to each precious soul on board. What agony those families and friends are experiencing, I can't even begin to imagine.
Yes I agree, such agony.

this is only for their initial expenses that they've incurred. it's estimated that each family will be receiving between 800k-4 million dollars when all is said and done.

This is only an initial payout to help the families with any expenses; not a settlement.
