Twigs, Trees & Tangled Wings

This week, Jackie & Shadow continued with their nestorations. To us the nest might look a little messy, but it is right where they want it to be! They always seem to pull it all together just in time for eggs.

Sunday, they both came in delivering sticks, but didn’t spend too much time in the nest, in and out and spent most of the day doing other eagle things. Shadow did bring a stick; well, it looked more like a small tree! We slowed down the video to get a better look at his colorful addition!

Monday, the eagles kept the curly twigs, big sticks and mini trees coming. Shadow worked on placing the curly sticks while Jackie kept an eye on the ravens soaring around the nest tree and playing in the wind. Ravens are known for using the winds to show off their excellent acrobatics.

There are only a few birds that use flight for fun instead of getting from point a to point b, ravens are one of those!

Later in the afternoon, Jackie brought in a nice tree of her own, it seems as though they are competing on who can bring in the wonkiest sticks this year.

Who knew a live eagle cam could have bloopers? While Shadow was working hard on arranging the nest, Jackie floated in and it looked like she overshot her landing a bit, right into Shadow’s wings! Shadow took it in stride and kept on working while Jackie untangled herself.

Jackie attempted to pancake (laying down to test the nest), but Shadow tapped her on the head with his beak, maybe to let her know he is not quite ready yet.

The last delivery of the day, Shadow brought in another impressive tree, handed it well, and placed it perfectly. At the end of their day, Jackie headed off to roost as Shadow watched her closely to see where to meet up with her.

Thank you all for soaring along on this grand adventure with us!

A Fluff Delivery and More Crazy Sticks…

Eagle Image

Shadow was the first to arrive yesterday morning with his talons full of fresh fluff. After landing, he picked the pile up in his beak and spread it around. It looked like some wet grass or reeds mixed with pine needles, perhaps found on the shore of the lake.

Eagles may use a variety of any available materials like this to cushion the nest bowl.

The nest bowl or egg cup is a depression in the center of the nest which not only provides a soft and comfortable place for Jackie to lay eggs but also protects the newly hatched chicks in their first few weeks of life.

It helps keep the eggs and young chicks insulated and safe during incubation. Jackie does most of the incubating, especially during inclement weather. However, as we have seen in the past, Shadow seems to look forward to his time incubating too… of course, whenever Jackie lets him! The nest may still look somewhat uncomfortable but no worries, more fluff will come as they get closer to egg laying

At the end of their morning shift, Jackie delivered two more sticks, then after a break, both returned later as the sun peeked through the trees. Shadow came in first again and went right to work. He has a couple of slightly discolored tail feathers that may help to tell the two apart at the moment.

Jackie showed her patience as she struggled with a branch she delivered. She kept pulling it on, but it was actually stuck between her legs! It took some work, but she finally figured it out.

Then a determined Jackie, who got a bit tangled in another twiggy stick, safely freed herself again before heading up to the attic lookout tower. Shadow made some progress in the nest and when Jackie came back down to join him, they took a couple of beaky kiss breaks.

They both managed to do a good amount of work as they took turns fiddling with those wonky sticks. Distant mating calls were heard this morning, and Jackie spent some alone time perching on the front porch for an hour before the rain arrived later today.

Happy New Year to our eagle family near and far! We appreciate you and your support for Jackie and Shadow!
