Not sure about all of these . . . but one. When it's possible to write a novel, or compose anything, for that matter, on a tablet, then perhaps it could be said that laptop/desktop computers will be obsolete.

I have an Ipad. In apps you can not only download Adobe but you can download word. office document writer omuch more.

And what do you use for a keyboard? And formatting? I have been a typist since high school (1950s). I cannot type on those tiny keyboards. I guess one would have to buy a full size wireless keyboard? So what would be the point of having an ipad and no computer? You couldn't fit a wireless keyboard in your handbag, could you? And if you don't have the mobility, what would be the point? You can fit some laptop computers into a large handbag. Perhaps it's my ignorance and I'm just not up on what's out there.

Anyway, it's a matter of personal choice. I don't see computers going anywhere any time soon.

I agree Ford. Desktops/laptops - not going anywhere. Programmers need them. Any system needs servers. And writers use many other tools that are not commercial apps.

you aren't ignorant of the options out there - it makes no sense to make your tablet into a mini computer, when it doesn't have the same power as a laptop (nor all of the options)

there is a place for all of these new things - smartphones, tablets, desktops, laptops. There will always be a professional need for the desktops and laptops.

It was too small to read, but I see reply #1 mentioned computers, landlines, and cable tv. I would not get rid of any of those either.

All my computers are laptops and that is just perfect for me. I kind of wish technology didn't start this thing where there is one line of choices. Like, ok, I am sure tablets and all that are great. But the screens are too small for some people so why couldn't there be computers with larger screens AND tablets and such.

One thing that has affected me is cell phones. I've had a cell phone since 1995. But I truly have zero need for a smart phone. NTTAWWT, but some of us don't need/want a smartphone. But if you are still in the dumbphone market you are pretty much skrewed. You are not in the carriers' targeted markets at all anymore and you can just get junky little qrap phones. (sorry - kind of a rant on the latest phone I had to get when they closed the Nextel network and I had to buy a Sprint network capable phone.) But the main thing is that the choice spectrum is seriously diminished if you don't want a smartphone. There used to be lots of regular phone choices. ok, rant over. Smiley Happy

Hi CB! That's why we bought a smartphone. While it has a lot of function that we'll never use (because we have our computers that we prefer), the phones are cool and our plan is just $35 per month for 300 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data. My dh now texts me most of the time and we both end up using less than 100 minutes of talk time per month.

Also, I too am not interested in getting a tablet for the same reason....screen too small.

We pay a lot more for our Verizon Smartphone plan. We pay $40+ for each phone, but another charge for share every unl tlk&text 4GB. Our contract is up this summer.

We use solely our smartphones, no landphone.

Re: 10 things you should NOT buy/get in 2014

I love my tablet and smartphone but would never give up my laptop for now. I need a new one and need to start doing some research but I dont think I would do without one for now. Maybe if I was retired and didnt need it. Tablets are wonderful but they are much smaller and while I have keyboard for mine, I wonder how it would hold up to constant use. I couldnt imagine using a tablet for "real" work that involves hours at a stretch. I am toying with giving up cable but I havent made that decision yet. I do think with all the streaming devices it would be easy depending on what you watch. My smartphone though, as much as I love it, dont really know that I need to be paying all that money for it. I am tied into a contract for now but will need to evaluate later what I want to do once it is up. I know what I have is redundant but each does serve a purpose at times.

Re: 10 things you should NOT buy/get in 2014

We have a brand new security system in our home so we don't need the landline for it. However, I have elderly relatives and my home phone is the number they know and remember so I won't give up my home phone because of that.

I'm on our laptop at home much more than I am the tablet or my cell phone if I want to actually do anything. I like the larger screen space. How can I do my income tax return on a tablet??????

We can get Netflix streaming on our tv but the programs are horrible. We struggled to find movies we wanted to watch as they are all very old and outdated. The tv shows aren't current either. Not interested in getting rid of our cable for that reason nor am I interested in getting rid of our Blu-ray player.

My car has the built-in GPS in it that shows up on my radio and I absolutely love that.

Thanks Biancardi . . . I respect your opinion. I think those who have not had the history of working with typewriters and computers practically all of their lives, and just know the newer technologies, are not able to appreciate the difference in power and versatility of a computer.

My youngest daughter is a graphics artist and web designer. There is no way she could create her art on an Ipad.

Interesting. I've seen lots of "must have" lists in my lifetime, but never a "must not have" list. My response to both is: who sez?

I just saw this. Oh wow! This morning, just a few minutes ago in fact, I was talking to my husband on the phone. Somehow it came up about the piece o qrap stupid phone I have now and he mentioned that maybe by the time my current contract is out (end of this yr) they will be cheaper.

I remarked that, because of my really small use, and I don't even text, it's not so much about the price of a phone. I could handle that. It's just that I thought the monthly amt is so much higher. I have 200min for $29 a month (plus the little taxes and stuff). I figured it would be considerably more if I got a smartphone.

I'll have to look around. I have Sprint right now. My husband has ATT and it's just awful here. But Sprint has gotten almost as bad, once they stopped using the Nextel network (I had Nextel before Sprint acquired them and just lately they moved us all to their, inferior, network. Nextel was awesome). I'm looking at Verizon and I don't know what else yet.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out. I don't use a phone or anything else for internet either, as I cannot handle a tiny screen. Plus, I need a full keyboard. I don't do plinky typing.

Ha! Maybe if I did my posts w/b shorter. {#emotions_dlg.blushing}

I sure can relate, CB !! One cannot type 120 wpm on a matchbook cover!! I text, but only because that is the only form of communication my kids and grandkids use these days. I dislike it immensely!! I have told them if they have more than two sentences to say and it requires more than one sentence from me . . . they have to pick up the phone!

Sometimes I think we go backwards instead of forward.
