WHAT ARE YOU READING? ~ SEPTEMBER 2017

Happy SEPTEMBER 2017 to all of our reading friends!

Welcome to all the new members of our group. Here are some of the suggestions that have been requested...

Underline, "bold" or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is.

Please include the author of the book - first and last name. There are so many books with the same, or similar title (if you are recommending a book, we want to make sure we read the right one)!

If you like, post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not, and why.

Tell us the book genre - is it fiction, a mystery, romance, historical fiction, biography, memoir, or any other type of book.

Of course, there is no obligation to do any of the above, but it makes life more enjoyable for all of us here.

And please, NO SPOILERS**

If you have any suggestions, please shout it out, as we’re always open to new ideas!

Have a great month, and happy reading to all!

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? ~ SEPTEMBER 2017

Took a break from my Brad Thor marathon and got Dean Koontz' new book "The Silent Corner."  I'm almost finished - not sure, even close to the end, if I like it or not.  Seems it is the first of a few Jane Hawk books - continuing story.

Going to B&N next week to pick up the new Louise Penny book "Glass Houses" and the new Vince Flynn book "Enemy Of The State."  Also coming out later this month is Harlen Coben's new one - "Don't Let Go."

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? ~ SEPTEMBER 2017

Our local book club is reading (or re-reading in some cases) THE RED TENT by Anita Diamant.  The story of Dinah, daughter of Jacob from the Book of Genisis, it tells about the struggles of women in those times.

I am re-reading THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD by James Lee Burke getting ready for the release of his next Dave Robicheaux novel ROBICHEAUX in January.  Not often that I re-read anything but making an exception for these two.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of Ken Follett's third book in the saga from THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH and WORLD WITHOUT END.  This one is A COLUMN OF FIRE and we are up to the time of Queen Elizabeth in the 1500's.  Got it pre-ordered and can't wait!

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? ~ SEPTEMBER 2017

Yesterday I finished The Heart of Henry Quantum by Pepper Harding. I wish I had read the Goodreads reviews before picking up this book as I did not like it at all. Usually I can find some redeeming quality about a book whether it is the writing, a character or the setting but I cannot think of a thing that I liked about this book. I guess the only thing I liked was that it was short and I finished it quickly. I thought I posted this already but it did not show up so here it goes again.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? ~ SEPTEMBER 2017

ANNA AND THE SWALLOW MAN  by  Gavriel Savit    This book has won all kinds of rewards!  I do not know the genre.  It is, to me, part fairy tale and part historical fiction.  It has a lot of metaphors and is beautifully written.  This kept my interest.  The book is about a young Polish girl.  Her father was captured by the Germans.  She was left alone and took up with a brilliant man who taught her the ways of the world and dangers while they roamed through the woods, escaping the Germans.

LILAC GIRLS  by  Martha Hall Kelly    Historical Fiction, and a very good book. The lives of 3 women during WWII and how they intertwined, although they lived in different parts of the country, making their experiences varied.

THE DEMON IN THE FREEZER  by  Richard Preston   A microbiologist explains the dangers of some organisms, mainly anthrax and small pox.  Easy to understand and interesting. Frightening when he explains how the Soviet Union's small pox virus has been unaccounted for since 1991.

THE GLASS CASTLE  by  Jeanette Walls   I am currently reading this true story of a poor family always on the move.  The parents are brilliant, but lack responsibility and upheavel is the name of their game.  This generational process will, hopefully, be broken as I reach the end of the book.  An interesting read.

@abbalulu- I'm sorry you didn't like The Heart of Henry Quantum. I just checked my list, and I see that I pulled the bookmark on it this past November. Thankfully I didn't read the whole thing. I really try to avoid doing that. I have so many wonderful books to read, but you know, sometimes you think the book is going to get better. Sadly, sometimes it doesn't.
