Re: The Girl Before *************SPOILERS!!!!****************

[ Edited ]

I just finished The Girl Before.  It was okay.  I guess the hype left me a bit disappointed, and like @Alter Ego, there were logistic gaps that made me scratch my head.  I'm not sorry I read it; it just wasn't as good as I had hoped.  ETA...I can totally see how this will translate well to a movie, but I have no interest in seeing it or any other books made into movies, since I know what happens.

Hi! Not sure if this thread is still active or not but I just finished the book and I'm a bit confused about whether or not she keeps the baby at the end. It was unclear to me, could somebody please clarify? Thank you Smiley Happy

Hello!  Welcome to the forums.

It's been a while since I've listened to the audiobook, but I believe her entire reason in getting involved with him was to get pregnant.  He offered to have another child with her, but she turned him down - she could never abort after her first child died.  As far as I recall, she kept the baby.

I read the book and like many others stated didn't live up to the hype. It was okay. I felt the ending was too neatly wrapped up whereas the meat of the book dragged on and on.

@jdogreads hi and welcome to the QVC Book Board.

As long as a thread is here and it doesn't say "closed," it's always open for discussion. I'm glad you logged in!

I read the book but honestly don't remember it all that well since it's been a while.  You'll get good advice here, so read up and enjoy!

Re: The Girl Before *************SPOILERS!!!!****************

Well, I just finished the the book The Girl Before.

At the end, I was like Huh?  I thought the book was pretty good.  I was interested enough to keep coming back to find out what happened.  I thought the ending was a big let down after building tension that led to the end.

My conclusion is that this book just missed having a great ending.

@sunala@Alter Ego et al, what do you think?  LM

@apple sauce, to me the book fell apart at the end.  See my comments.  LM

Re: The Girl Before *************SPOILERS!!!!****************

I found the ending confusing; I read it as Edward said if she'd give up the baby he would give her the house - and he would give her another baby.  But at the very end she says that she will take what she can from him, then "let them fade" and when Toby is old enough she will take down the shoe box and tell him the story of his sister..."  That sounded as though she would take the house but not give up the baby - contradicting what he had offered.

But then I went back and carefully re-read his offer - after "If you'll give the baby up for adoption" there is an ellipsis - 3 dots - followed by "I'll give you the house.  Your house, now, to do with as you choose."  So apparently he was giving her the house immediately, and she could make up her mind about the baby later.  So she would take as much time as she could before telling him she wouldn't give up the baby, when he would leave her.

Who knew an ellipsis could have so much effect!
