I know that being able to get into a book depends on your mood at the time (speaking for myself on this). Right now, I just can’t seem to get into anything. I normally will alternate a book with a heavier plot line with light reading. That doesn’t seem to be working so I think I will close the books for a day or so and something will call my name when I work out of this “slump”. Any of you get yourself in a slump and if so, what do you do to get yourself out of it?

I go to the library and check out a variety of magazines, especially some that I would never buy or have not read very often. After a few days of reading the same old articles and looking at the hundreds of ads, I am usually more than ready to go back to real books.

I can always find something I want to read. I just finished Lisa Scottoline's Feared and I'm now reading Karin Slaughter's Pieces of Her. I have on my pile from the library The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis, Bone on Bone by Julia Keller and An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena and Respect - Aretha Franklin. I also have And the Ladies of the Club - it is a thick book with small print, so I may read that one in spurts along with my others in the pile. I don't normally do that, but I will for this one.

Sometimes we just need a break. Why don't you try taking a few days off without reading.

I love to read but have to admit I have to take a break occasionally. I didn't read anything from about October through March. My neighbor recommended Barbara Delinsky. I read three or four of her books and took a break. Now I am reading the Amish murder mysteries by Linda Castillo. Waiting for Louise Penny's new realise due out in November, Kingdom of the Blind.

I only have a certain amount of time for entertainment, so if I can't find something I want to read, then I will watch a movie or a television series. If that doesn't appeal to me, then I'll pull out a favorite book and read it again. I think sometimes there's so much stress in life that you need the familiar rather than the unknown. Reading a favorite book again is like visiting an old friend.

I have been an avid reader since I was in third grade, and I'm now 63. There have been many times over the years that I've been stalled on reading. I've been on a roll this summer, averaging two books a week, sometimes three. When I'm all read out, and it will happen, I'll read magazines, catch up on shows on my DVR, talk on the phone more to my friends and family maybe even give the house a good cleaning. LOL. I can usually find something to keep me occupied until that feeling of "I need to read something" comes back.

I know when I finish a series that I love I kind of feel that way. Some kind of let down I guess. Sometimes it takes several days to pick up a new book.

@joannecha When I get into a reading rut, I read really short and easy-to-read books.
And Every Morning the Way Hone Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman is essentially a short story. It is touching and very good. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo is a children's book. So, it is short and easy to read. But it is very moving and perfect for adults, too.
It is kind of fun to venture into the Children's or Young Adult Sections to find really good literature.
Some fun to read ones from there are: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.

To get out of a reading slump, I re-read a favorite. I have a few books (some stand-alones and some series) that I like to revisit when nothing else sounds good. I also like to head to Instagram (Bookstagram) to get recs from some of my favorite readers. There are also many book recommendation podcasts that have awesome suggestions!
