Here is another vote for Stephen King, although I have to say that I prefer his older work, and I have not read him in years.
He really is a master storyteller and has written so many other books that people do not readily credit him with such as Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, or Delores Claiborne.
One book that always sticks out in my memory as an excellent book by him would be Misery.
I also want to put in a plug for Dean R. Koontz, all of his books/story lines take place in California.

How about "To Kill a Mockingbird"?

My very favorite is Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon. I re-read every October. It builds slowly to the final conclusion. With every read I discover something I missed. Excellent book. Don't bother with the movie as it was horrible.
