I think I must be too sensitive....

So I love a good mystery, my favorite genre.  And I've been hearing about Karin Slaughter since forever and so I thought I'd finally read one of her most highly-rated books.  This book has "High to the Heavens" reviews, everywhere.  So I finally downloaded it and read it. Big mistake!

What the heck?  Yes, I did know about the subject matter, the graphic DETAILED descriptions.  But call me naive, I didn't think it would be that crazy.  Dang, when I tell you this book brought me down and discombobulated my world, that is an understatement.  How in hail are people reading this and recommending it as the holy grail of mysteries?

As a stand-alone mystery without what I call the "torment" -  it's just subpar.  It drags in places.  And is unnecessarily wordy.  So many plot holes, imo.  Nevertheless, the mystery of it all will hook you as you want to know what's going to happen next.  And you want justice, retribution, and all the GODS that ever were, to come down and wreck havoc on the villain in the most painful, slow way. I wish I'd never read this bish of a book.

Is there a book that just disturbed your essence so much you'd gladly throw it in a burning pile?

I have read all the Will Trent books and they can be gruesome.  However, I still enjoy her books.  I like her characters and story lines.  I look forward to the next Will Trent book.

[ Edited ]

@Northray Many years ago I had heard of 50 Shades of Grey but didn't really know much about it. I either got it from the library or borrowed from a friend, I've forgotten.

I'm not a prude but a ways in I had to stop reading it. I felt like I needed a shower.

I have not read this particular book, but I have read other books by Karin Slaughter and she definitely has the proper last name. She can be graphic and sometimes disturbing.

Whenever I read books like hers and others I think to myself thank God that you are an author, and not a serial killer. :-)

@Northray  What is the title of the book?  I have read all the Will Trent books and a few of her others, but it has been awhile.  She can write a pretty gruesome book.

Right?  I mean, wow, what an imagination.

Every time one of the horrible scenes just pops into my brain, I counter with, Karin Slaughter.  As in to remind myself that those scenes aren't real and just the imaginings of a somewhat twisted, prolific author.  I hope there is no place in the world where such things happen.  But I'm afraid it is happening somewhere what with all the sex trafficking and whatnot.

@Northray,

I haven't read any of her books but I loved your review! You sound just like a friend of mine and her sayings.

I have read about 2 books I actually threw away because I

didn't want anyone to have to read them and experience how unredeeming and depressing and why in the H? would anyone write a book like that?!

Right!  It's like do we need that much graphic chaos?  I mean I know there is an audience for this type of material but let's tone it down some because the world doesn't need it's azzhole on display constantly.  I mean we've shown our ugliness, let's uplight now for change.  Or at least write something not so putrid.
