With summer coming to a close, Nikki and I realized that we had not yet taken a trip to New York City...we love New York City!
I had a chance to buy discount tickets to a show which delights dancers and non-dancers alike...An American in Paris. The storyline is based in 1951, with an American ex-GI who stays in post-war Paris to become a painter and falls in love with a beautiful ballerina. Needless to say, the costumes, dancers, and music were amazing. And what a perfect setting, too—the Palace Theatre in Times Square!
There is so much to do and see in NYC. After the show, we decided to explore Chelsea Market. Chelsea Market has a great collection of eclectic shops of food, crafts, fashion…you name it. And the people watching is off of the charts!
After that, we walked on the High Line…all the way from the entrance at 14th Street to 34th Street, with just a break for an all-natural popsicle.
If you aren't familiar, the High Line is a park that stretches across an elevated freight train rail over Manhattan. It opened to trains in 1934, carrying goods to and from the Industrial District. The last trains ran in 1980, pulling three carloads of frozen turkeys. In 1999, thanks to the efforts of many individuals including residents of the neighborhood, the preservation project began. 15 years later, the railroad trestle has become a tourist destination…and a wonderful way to discover NYC. The artwork, the history, the view, and the self-sustaining gardens are just breathtaking. And, we got to experience it all on a wonderful summer day. Amazing!
We ended our night with a great meal of spinach fettuccine with free-range chicken meatballs…and homemade pizza. There is always fabulous food to be found in the city.
I bribed Nikki to walk another ten blocks with me, with the promise of tiny cupcakes from Baked by Melissa...by the end of the night we had walked seven miles, so we certainly earned them!
Thanks NYC, for another inspiring memory with my daughter. I hope you are making special memories with your loved ones and enjoying your summers as much as possible too.
All the best,
Pat
