Think Spring With Grass!

Wheat grass isn't just for juicing anymore!  I love making centerpieces, arrangements and party favors with wheat grass.  Since wheat grass has strong roots and is bound tightly, it is wonderful to use in many applications.   With a few inexpensive supplies – ribbons, eggs, and flowers – you can make plush, green, spring showstoppers!

I have sowed my own flats of wheat grass with seeds and soil – grass will grow within two weeks or so.  But you can also purchase flats from your local garden centers.

This centerpiece begins with a flat of grass.  I wrap a colorful ribbon around the base to cover the “mechanics.”  I took tulips and ranunculus – some of my favorite spring flowers – and placed them in water tubes.  This will not only keep the flowers fresh longer, but should you want to switch-out the flowers it’s so easy!

A great unique tall arrangement to be placed on your kitchen island or buffet is made from a flat of grass and a cylinder vase.  Wrap the grass around the vase with florist wire (or even fishing line) tightly.  I like when you can see the roots too – it makes for an earthy natural look.  I take a bunch of Forsythia from my backyard that is just about to bloom and place into the vase.  And again, add ribbon or raffia for whatever look you like.

I also love the idea of personalized place settings that my guests can take with them.  If you have the time and want a bit more color on your table, you can paint small terra cotta pots or simply go for more the natural look of the clay.  Cut the grass with scissors and place into the pots – no lawn mower needed!   I like to add a name or message “Welcome Spring” or “Happy Easter.”   Then I take a colored egg and place on top.  Voila!

Welcome spring.  We’ve been waiting for you!
