Show Yourself the Love

Ahh, February, the magical month that brings us Valentine’s Day. Whether it's about romantic dinners, girls' nights out, or homemade cards, it’s right around the corner, and it's made me think a lot about what it means to love myself.

Recently, I was getting the family ready for school and work. (I keep it quick and simple in the mornings…there’s no time for anything else!) As I rushed through my hair and makeup, my four-year-old son stood at the bathroom door watching me. “Why do you do that, mama?” he asked. It was a good question. “So I can look my best when I go outside today,” I answered. He took my hand, looked me in the eye, and said, “You always look beautiful to me.” (Always a charmer, this kid!) He took a picture of me with my phone.

It didn’t matter how I looked in that outfit or if my hair was just so. I was the most beautiful woman in his life no matter what, and that made me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. He loved my unkempt hair, my blemishes, my pudgy belly…they're part of what makes me, well, me. And if I wanted to blow my hair out, wear the perfect pair of black boots, or yes, airbrush my face for some flawless radiance and that extra boost of confidence, well, that’d be just fine, too.

It’s so important for us to honor all kinds of beauty. For me, that begins with loving myself so my sons can know what it means to love themselves, and so they can learn to honor the beauty of the women they'll love in the future.
