It’s Ice Cream Social Time!

Hi Foodies,

I LOVE ice cream, so when I heard that it was National Ice Cream Month and that David Venable is doing a month long celebration of Frozen Treats, I knew I had to do something to celebrate too!

My daughter’s birthday is this month and she really wanted to go to one of those make-your-own-frozen-yogurt-sundae-shops for her birthday party. Do you have one of those shops near you? My family goes crazy at our local shop. They allow you to take as much frozen yogurt as you want, with as many toppings you want, and then you weigh your bowl and you pay based on the weight of your bowl. Well, needless to say, we have a difficult time controlling ourselves and the costs to go to these great places are a bit too much for our budget. Unfortunately, all I saw was dollar signs when I thought about having a birthday party there. So, we compromised – we would have an Ice Cream Social at our house!

First, we had to make sure we had a few flavors of ice cream. I kept the ice cream flavors basic since the toppings could make the taste interesting if there are too many flavors playing together. We chose Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. I didn’t have any lactose-intolerant guests, but I would recommend a Sorbet or Yonanas to serve if you are unsure of guests with allergies or intolerances.

Next, we needed the base (or what to serve the ice cream in). I made sure we had bowls, waffle bowls, sugar cones, and regular cones. I also had large chocolate chip cookies in case anyone wanted to make an ice cream sandwich. Don’t forget spoons and plenty of napkins too. We also had birthday cake so it wasn’t all ice cream.

And finally, the best part, the toppings! We had:
•    Rainbow sprinkles/chocolate jimmies
•    Chocolate syrup
•    Caramel syrup
•    Strawberries
•    Blueberries
•    Bananas
•    Oreo cookies
•    Nuts
•    Gummy bears
•    Mini M&Ms
•    Peanut butter cups
•    Whipped cream
•    Maraschino cherries

The Ice Cream Social was a hit! Here’s my son who went a little nuts – he made a “castle” of ice cream!)

What do you think? Have you ever held an Ice Cream Social? Did I forget any of your favorite toppings?
