This Fashion Week, we're introducing you to Christian Francis Roth, an award-winning sportswear designer who's new to the QVC family. His signature style is classic, with a whimsical twist - hence the playful title for his QVC collection, Twist by Christian Francis Roth. Today I had the privilege of joining the QVC video crew to visit Roth's new studio, a light-filled, loft-like space just a few blocks from Bryant Park, to talk about his latest projects.
In the studio, huge bolts of colorful fabric were piled next to dress dummies in various states of dress and draping, as racks of tagged clothing lined the opposite wall, waiting for sale. Mr. Roth himself, wearing laid-back Converse sneakers and instantly likable with his kind eyes and firm handshake, smoothly went about his business despite the Fashion Week bustle.
He graciously took us on a tour of his work space, explaining his design aesthetic - clothing that's interesting, accessible, and youthful in spirit yet wearable by women of any age. In the back of the studio is his work room, where his design team was busy with their latest project - an out-of-this-world collection of celestial color and galactic designs inspired by a recent trip to the Hayden Planetarium. In between video takes, I was able to view the creative process in action - sketch artists, seamstresses, and fabric cutters were all hard at work. (Think Project Runway, minus the competitive drama.)

The team considers the sleeve length of a black dress on model Anya. The consensus is to keep it long, with some ruching.
When asked how his high-end fashions will translate to his more affordable QVC collection, the answer is simple. Roth explained, his designs for both go through the same process of inspiration to execution, and they come from the same place of personal creativity. His QVC fashions are very much his designs, fashioned for a broader audience.
Curious about what's in store for QVC shoppers? Tune in on the 17th for two of Roth's personal recommendations - a bold, color-blocked maxi dress and a fabulously fun garment that's a combination of a wrap dress and a classic rugby shirt. I'll say no more - just don't miss the fashions on the runway!
