Though it may seem like the sets you see on QVC are decorated overnight, it actually takes our Scenic Styling team months of prep and planning to make the magical holiday transformation. Every detail is meticulously thought out so that cozy holiday spirit oozes out of your television screen. The team spends four days adorning twenty sets in garland and gifts. They also hang a staggering 2,300 ornaments and wrap more than 500 gifts!
The scenic stylists start prepping for the holidays in March. They place orders for fabrics, window treatments, pillows, throws, ornaments, and other tree trimmings. When planning the looks, the stylists consider every space in the studio—from staircases to fireplaces. Fireplaces are scenic stylist Liam’s specialty. “My favorite thing about decorating for holiday sets is creating a warm and cozy environment by the fireplace. This year I was able tie together a traditional yet modern style.”
Once the decorations arrive, the team moves full steam ahead with unpacking and organizing. The stylists wear gloves up to their elbows to shape the tree branches and spend hours decorating only one tree until they have it just right. Then they use the exact number of each ornament from that tree to make ‘kits’ for decorating all the other trees. This year they placed over a thousand tree picks and hung ornaments on 26 Christmas trees.
If that isn’t how you decorate your own tree, scenic stylist Rose says you’re right! “Decorating a tree for TV is a lot different than decorating a tree for your living room. All visuals have to show depth and texture or they will look flat. The stylists strategically layer our ornaments from the inside out so the tree has more depth when shown on a screen.”
Rose and her team also add greenery and berry picks that offer contrast to the evergreen. Then all of the trees and gifts get camera tested to make sure there’s the right amount of color and texture.
This year, approximately ten to twelve hours were spent decorating each set, and the majority of decorations used are sold by QVC. So if you see something you like in the background of a shot, most likely you can find it on QVC.com. Scenic stylist Beth was happy to guide customers to products they liked. “We had a question come through on social media about what types of trees we use, and for the first time ever we were able to tell customers exactly what they were and that they can be ordered through us.”
Despite the intense work involved, our stylists don’t seem to mind. In fact, Alexa enjoys the process. “This time of year we get to express our creativity and design environments that invite the customer into our home. I like to think we bring a little magic into their hearts through beautiful design and innovation.”
