I recently had the chance to sit down with Lisa Getz from QVC and talk about Father's Day.  Didn't want you to miss out!  Take a read below-feel free to leave a comment Smiley Happy

Story by Lisa Getz

Program host Rick Domeier has a big appetite for Father’s Day. This year, he’ll be feasting with his family at a restaurant where, according to Rick, they serve “the most massive pile of pancakes on earth!” His wife, Amy, and two sons, Nick and Josh, enjoy sinking their teeth into this family tradition as well.

Another way Rick celebrates Father’s Day is by remembering his late father, Les Domeier, a World War II veteran. Les fought in 10 battles in the Pacific Ocean as a Gunner’s Mate First Class on the U.S.S. Boise. Rick somberly recalls that his father almost lost his life numerous times and just missed Pearl Harbor by a few days when his ship set sail. The stories of his courage— along with his character and compassion—are an endless source of inspiration for Rick and those who knew Les. But Rick thinks of his father as more than just a hero. “He inspired me as a father, and by setting examples that I can only dream of emulating,” says Rick. Les was married to Rick’s mom, Phyllis, for 61 years, setting an example for his son and grandsons that will be hard to live up to.

Growing up in his hometown of New Ulm, Minnesota, Rick thrived on the small-town values his father taught him. “Dad gave simple, true advice like, ‘live a clean life, save for a rainy day, do the right thing, be home on time, get up early,’ and, Rick adds with an easy laugh, ‘take out the trash.’” Rick and his father were huge Vikings football fans. “The Vikings were a really great football team back in the day. We’d watch the games together then go outside and play catch,” Rick shares. “Just playing catch, going out for passes—that simple memory is really moving for me.” Les was a quarterback, and Rick followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming the quarterback in high school. Both Nick and Josh are very athletic, and Rick and Amy stay as involved as their busy schedules will allow by attending games, cheering from the bleachers, and even coaching.

Though the boys share the same enthusiasm for sports as their father and grandfather, Rick is proud that they are both choosing their own paths for the future. He may not know what the future holds for either of his sons, but he is certain that they will do just fine. As parents, Rick and Amy work hard to instill in Nick and Josh the same small-town values they were taught. They hope the boys learn by example that little things mean a lot, and that an important aspect of parenting is simply being present. “Just be there,” Rick emphasizes, “at the game, the graduation, the school play. Do whatever you can to be there.” Rick sums up his fatherly advice: “I want them to know they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Just go for it, be realistic, but really go for it in life. And remain true to yourself while you are on your journey.”

An inspiring legacy, indeed.
