Recently, I put a post on Bob Mackie’s Facebook page asking, “What, in your opinion, is a fashion DO and/or a fashion DON’T?” Thank you for all of the fabulous responses. Of course, there were a couple of “DO’S”, referring to Bob’s gorgeous gowns and Emmy Award winning “curtains” from The Carol Burnett Show, but, let’s be honest….We can’t wear red carpet evening gowns or theatrical costumes every day.
As I read through the comments, I did notice that there was some great advice, as well as several topics that were definitely blog worthy:
“Know Your Body Type”
I thought to myself, “How often do I think about that when I go shopping?” Not the first instinct that comes to mind. I look at something and think “CUTE,” “I LOVE IT,” and “I CAN’T WAIT TO TRY THAT ON!” Then there is the moment in the dressing room, or after I get it in the mail, where I do try it on…and, well, let’s just say it does not look as cute as it did in the magazine, on the model or even on the hanger. This was something that I dealt with a lot after I had my twins (2 ½ years ago). That was a turning point for me because my body changed a bit…for good! As I looked at your comments, I thought…this is good information that enlightens me with my quest for a better wardrobe. We are all built differently. That’s one reason there is so much to choose from. And even though there are so many things that other women can wear well that we can’t, we all have things that we wear well that others may not. We just have to figure out what those things are.
“Dress Your Age”
This comment, for me, carries a bit more emotion with it than the practicality of a body type. I am sure you have heard that “age is a state of mind.” I do believe this…you could say I have to, given the fact that I am a 47-year-old mother of an 11-year-old boy and 2 ½ year old twins. But, I have always felt that way, and I do think that does come into play with what you feel comfortable wearing. Part of this equation does rely on great designers to create fashion for us to choose from, but the other is what you feel is “age appropriate” for you. When I say “age appropriate,” I don’t mean the age number that you are, but the age number that you feel. If you feel it, it’s organic and, therefore, I believe you will wear it well. That is your right as a fashionista!
There are many other do’s and don’ts out there that we will talk about in the future, but, for now, keep those two thoughts in mind…I know I will!
