All of a sudden, desktop computers are hot again! What? In the past few years, notebooks have been outselling desktops almost 2 - 1! What’s with the recent shift in popularity? Well, there are a couple of theories in the industry and, of course, I have my own thoughts about it which I will share.

Most people now have so many portable devices, such as tablet computers, iPods, cell phones, and eReaders, that they need a powerful central “hub” to plug them into. Consumers are finding out just how easy (too easy) it is for notebooks to be taken by the kids to a private part of the house to be used for chatting when they aren’t supposed to. Plus, it’s hard to keep an eye on the websites the kids or tweens are surfing! When you have a desktop, the computer stays in one central location, so it makes it easier to check on their web-surfing habits.

This is my theory: if notebooks have been crazy-popular for the past few years, most people have been barely using their desktop. Now that they need their desktop more than ever to plug all of those handheld devices into, consumers are finding their desktop is lagging. It’s time to upgrade!
