Since Nikki is away at college, my goal is to finally organize and clean out my house...last year I had the same goal, and I started in the master bathroom. After many hours of sorting, organizing, and cleaning the bathroom, I decided it was mission accomplished. I volunteered all of my free time so that I didn’t have to continue with the rest of the house!
Nikki is now a sophomore in college, and I decided to give the goal another go. This time, I started in the garage. I organized, cleaned, and made many donations to the local Vietnam Vets store. Everything was going great, but then I brought home almost an entire car full of stuff from Nikki's dorm room and was back where I started...it was a slight setback, let’s say!
Last week I tackled kitchen cabinets that I hadn’t visited in lots of years...and I found that I had more than my share of food processors! It was the wedding gift of the moment twenty years ago. Wine decanters, too! I realized in a sobering moment that a lot of my canned goods were from 2010...I know I need to clean out the dark corner of my cabinets more often, but the expiration date of 2010 represented a dramatic change in my life which stared me in the face on all of the expiration dates...it also left me wondering what we have been eating in the last five years...LOL!
After that, I moved upstairs to my closet, with a goal of being realistic through my “closet purge,” as Leah would call it. The "hope" section will get donated as I will never be that thin again...
The “never-really-wore-much” and “did-not-look-good-on-me” sections got donated to my sister, Karen, who tends to be able to pull off certain looks better than I do.
I also moved summer clothing to storage and I put fall/winter into my master bedroom closet.
Of course, I had lots of company while cleaning out my closets...or maybe she was supervising. ![]()
What remained of my wardrobe I separated into categories of blouses, sweaters, pants, skirts, and dresses, and I hung everything on the same kind of hangers so it looked tidier and more uniform. I sorted clothes from sleeveless to sleeved, lightest to darkest. (And yes, I hang my sweaters on good hangers…but do not tell Jayne since she always reminds us not to do this!) I also set up over-the-door hangers to organize my clothes and accessories for the week...
After I was done, I packed the car with my donations, with the hope that someone else would enjoy them. (Don’t worry, I made sure the cat was not included!)
Do you have any organizing tips for your closet? I will keep you posted on my goal of cleaning and organizing the house...thank goodness I have two more years of college to get this done... ![]()
All the best!
