A Girls First Dance

by on ‎05-17-2016 11:23 AM

It’s a rite of passage for many teenage girls.  Buying that beautiful dress for your first formal school dance.  That moment came for me when I was in 9th grade, last year of Junior High School.  A good friend of mine asked me to go to the 9th grade Prom and I happily accepted.  At this time of my life I was focused on playing softball and cheering so I wasn’t big into fashion, YET.  But I knew who was, Ninny, my beautiful grandmother, and I immediately sought her help.

She worked in a beautiful boutique that specialized in special occasion and party attire.  She had me come to the store after hours.  I had the entire place to myself.  I stared at the racks not knowing where to start.  When I turned to her feeling overwhelmed, there she stood holding the most incredible dress.

It was an off-white lace cap sleeve dress.  The lace looked so elegant and princess like.  But the part I remember and loved the most was the hemline.  It came down to about my knees then was cut into points at different lengths.  The dress exuded both femininity and a bit of edge.  It was perfect.

My dad teared up when he saw me in it.  The jaw of my date even dropped a little when I answered the door.  It was so pretty, yet cool and best of all, tasteful.

I don't have pictures of the dress. Somewhere they got lost.  But my grandmother went on to help me pick out future dresses, like the one below, for my junior and senior proms.

Turns out my grandmother knew me better than I knew myself back then.  She knew I loved beautiful things but always with a little “Pop of Drama” mixed in.
